Murcia celebrates 15 years as a congress city (25/06/2013)

Miguel Angel House notes that in the last decade has doubled Murcia revenues meetings market, reaching 28.9 million euros in 2012.

Since 2000, the number of meetings held has grown by 88%, while attendees have increased 172%.

In the past 15 years, Murcia has evolved and developed as a service capital, more modern and more means to improve the quality of life of citizens.

This trend has also been observed in the consolidation as a congress city, for which it has been essential the work of the convention bureau, which today celebrates the fifteenth anniversary of its creation.

The Mayor, Miguel Angel House, and the president of the Association of Members Contributors, Jesus Pacheco, today presided over the commemoration that took place in the gardens of the Museum of the whites, which have gathered from associated companies office and representatives from business and society Murcia.

In the course of it, and before attending the screening of a video that includes a retrospective of the 15 years of activity, prizes were awarded to two associates with the office since its inception: Cedes Conferences, Events and Services Tourism and Regional Auditorium Victor Villegas congress center.

Last year, the city entered EUR 28.9 million for this purpose, with an average expenditure per participant and day between 203 and 228 euros, depending on the accommodation.

This cost includes the registration fee, accommodation, meals and other extras like internal transport and shopping.

1,079 meetings were held, mostly generated by the medical and health sectors, economic and trade, with an attendance of 172,799 people.

15 years of growth

Also significant is the developments in these 15 years of activity.

If in 1998 the office was born with 19 member companies, today there are 70.

As for the hotel rooms, from 1,169 rooms in 2000 (earliest year for which statistics are available), it has gone today to 2,030, representing a growth of 73%.

Moreover, of the 575 meetings held in 2000, organized last year 1080, representing an increase of 88%, while the number of delegates has grown 63500-172800 (172% more).

In line with these figures, the growth in the income reported to the city by the congress tourism sector has doubled, from 14.3 in 2000 to 28.9 million euros last year.

The Office was established in 1998 by the City Council in collaboration with public and private service sector (hotels, professional conference organizers, communication, transportation, etc..), One of its primary objectives the promotion of Murcia to host conferences , conventions and incentives.

Among other actions, is responsible for the coordination of supply and demand for city services, the development of specific technical dossiers, organizing sightseeing, management discounts for Congress in certain travel companies , institutional and technical support to the organizers of the events and the distribution of promotional materials and general information about Murcia.
