The Mayor presents comprehensive restoration of the monument in honor of Ricardo Codorniú, 'Apostle of the Tree' (07/06/2013)

The event was attended her granddaughter, Ana Maria Hernandez-Ros Codorníu, who already participated in the inauguration of the work in 1926.

The popular Codorniú Ricardo monument at the foot of the large ficus Santo Domingo, returns to show off in all its glory.

The Mayor of Murcia, Miguel Ángel Cámara, this morning the comprehensive restoration of the piece, which was inaugurated in 1926 to honor one of the most famous Murcia and naturalists of the time.

He was responsible Espuña reforestation and recovery of many species in the environment (golden eagle, Bonelli's eagle, kestrel, horseshoe bat, bobcats, lagineta, Barbary sheep ...).

The project has been managed through MurciaEscultura program, led to the recovery of the historical heritage of the city.

The work was placed at the foot of the popular ficus, which was planted in 1893.

The event was attended by the Councillor for Culture, Rafael Gomez, and Ana Maria Hernandez-Ros Codorníu, granddaughter of the engineer and who already participated in the inauguration of this work in 1926.

Restoration, on the other hand, has been in charge of the grandson of sculptor José Plans Lastra, also a sculptor and specialized in the work of his grandfather.

Planes, after inspecting the piece in his workshop, he discovered that showed the greatest damage that showed at first the different layers of paint added to the sculpture for decades, painting also not allow ventilation of the piece, eroding various parts of thereof.

Therefore, it was necessary to extend the project with a comprehensive restoration, which included the consolidation of stone, with numerous cracks repair, reconstruction of parts of the work, as has been the case Codorniú nose, and strengthening the stand structure, also made of stone.

After the restoration, also took the opportunity to get a silicone mold of the entire piece, which will undertake new future interventions if necessary, or even make an exact replica of the work.

Engineers have advised that the piece be located on a flowerbed next to the large ficus and under the tree, to prevent the release of any branch can damage it in the future.

Ricardo Codorníu and Stárico, grandfather of the inventor of the autogyro, was engineer of Forestry and the strongest advocate of Environment and care for nature, which became the main driver Espuña reforestation and Guardamar.

His interest raise public awareness of the need to preserve the natural environment, earning him the nickname Tree Apostle, resulted in hundreds of conferences and the publication of various works.

After his death in 1923 paid him several honors, including the placement of several sculptures in the Retiro Park in Madrid, Sierra Espuna and the Plaza de Santo Domingo in Murcia.
