UCAM Psychology National Conference: 'the dream in our society' (29/05/2013)

Physicians and psychologists involved in the UCAM in a day dedicated to the study of sleep and its disorders

The Catholic University of Murcia UCAM held today the National Conference of Psychology UCAM: 'the dream in our society', organized by the Degree in Psychology from the University.

Note that in these days doctors and psychologists have participated experts in sleep and its disorders as the director of the Sleep Unit and Ludor Ruber Clinic in Madrid, Luis Dominguez Ortega, who is also the director of the Department of Medicine UCAM Dream, among other professionals.

The Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the UCAM, Andres Martinez-Almagro, and the Dean's Degree in Psychology, Francisco José Moya, were responsible for inaugurating the National Conference of Psychology UCAM: 'the dream in our society 'which he said Francisco Moya, event coordinator, "is a critical issue since a third of our life is spent sleeping and sleep is important for humans both physiologically and psychologically."

He highlighted the practical utility of these conferences and training as they serve to "provide a more applied psychology students of this degree."

For his part, Professor Luis Dominguez, has lectured on the importance of sleep in society, as "Sleep disorders affect a large proportion of the world population over your life."

In fact, stressed that "many of the social problems are due to Sleep", as in the case of "accidents", because 20% of them are related to these disorders.

In addition, socially well-known disorders such as hyperactivity syndrome or attention deficit "often do not exist but are misdiagnosed sleep disorder."

Therefore, Luis Dominguez stressed that "it is important to have good sleep hygiene", ie sleep in a place with appropriate environmental conditions (temperature, lighting, etc..), Have a fixed schedule of sleep (especially in time to get up) and dinner before bedtime (two hours earlier if possible).

The conference has also intervened Elena Diaz Gallego, a psychologist at the Sleep Unit and Ludor Ruber Clinic, who has focused his presentation on one of the most common sleep disorders, insomnia, which affects 30% of the population and that "it is an important risk factor for the development of psychiatric disorders."

Elena Diaz has highlighted especially how insomnia affects children and that this pathology "has a great influence on behavioral disorders and learning for children."

The cause is usually "a bad sleep habit learning", so you have to "teach to sleep", so they can sleep alone and feel safe in bed.

Also explained that "children react differently than adults to sleep deprivation" adults react with drowsiness or fatigue while children do "hyperactivity".

Finally, spoke to Dr. Sara Cabrera García-Armenter, specialist in sleep disorders and Ludor Ruber Clinic who has treated the subject of hypersomnia or somnolence, ie the constant feeling sleepy during the day, and his diagnosis.
