Residues of Murcia saved 74,000 trees last year (17/05/2013)

Thanks to the 5,600 tons of paper delivered for collection, while 7,200 tons of glass led to savings of nearly a million gallons of fuel.

In total, over 2012 Murcia 16,800 tons of recycled waste.

More than 200 children participate in activities, workshops and games - "Recycle to create" - organized to mark the World Day for Recycling.

The Mayor delivered to school Sculptor González Moreno, Aljucer, an award for his contribution to recycling.

Therefore, it is necessary to maintain and even increase the awareness of citizens to spread the habit of separating because, in addition to giving a second life to waste, it also helps save natural resources, reduce emissions and combat climate change.

Only in 2012, the Murcia recycled 16,800 tons of waste.

With this result, the recovery allowed to stop cutting down 73,822 trees-that would have been required to print nearly 40 million copies of newspapers-and be spared 939,708 liters of fuel.

In addition, for each reused plastic bottle saves the energy required to maintain a light bulb for 6 hours, while metal packaging can be recycled indefinitely without losing quality.

In total, last year's collection conducted in the municipality allowed to recover nearly 4000 tons of containers, 5,700 tons of paper and 7,200 tons of glass.

Regarding 2000, year in which was implemented across the board this service-, in 2012 was multiplied by 18 the amount of packaging collected, tripled and quadrupled paper the glass.

As for 2011, only the latter grew while the waste collected in the blue and yellow containers decreased.

The current European directive aims to recover in 2020, 50% of urban waste generated.

Learning through play

The Plaza de Santo Domingo and to a lesser extent, St. Bartholomew and Romea, have been the scene of the activities organized by the council, in collaboration with Cespa, to commemorate World Recycling Day held today.

The Mayor, Miguel Angel House, accompanied by Councilman Urban Cleaning and Waste Management, Jose Ros, and Cespa delegate in Murcia, Antonio Igualada, visited the workshops installed in Santo Domingo.

The school Sculptor González Moreno, Aljucer, has received the World Recycling Recognition Day 2013-the school "more 3R" - for their contributions and partnerships to enhance the recovery and reuse of waste.

The Mayor delivered the award, consisting of a certificate and for the school computer.

The second prize of the day went to the school Doñana Bridge, La Albatalía, Gymkhana winner Recycling, which was held in the streets of Romea, San Bartolomé and Glorieta, where more than 200 students have participated in games , talks and workshops.
