Exhibition of drawings, concert and dining workshop to celebrate Europe Day (08/05/2013)

The City of Murcia celebrates Europe Day with a number of activities including exhibition are drawings, concert and dining workshop.

Councillor for Employment, Trade and Business, José María Tortosa, inaugurated this morning the information booth on Europe, which is located in the Plaza de Santo Domingo.

It provides information about the EU, its institutions, countries that form part of European construction process, rights of European citizens, etc..

The municipality of Murcia celebrates Europe Day since 1997, when it created the European Programmes Service.

José María Tortosa explained that outreach is aimed at creating a European identity.

In addition, the Council works in obtaining EU funding in all areas of municipal jurisdiction (employment, trade, business, urban development, environment, transport and energy, social integration, cultural industry development cooperation and neighborhood policy, new technologies, etc.) and participation in transnational networks.

Europe Day is celebrated on May 9 and symbolizes the success of the European Union, including the euro, the flag or the anthem.

The origin of this day goes back to May 9, 1950, when the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman, one of the fathers of the European Union, made his famous 'Schuman Declaration' in which it requested to France, Germany and other European countries were united to create a pool of the production of coal and steel, through a new European organization.

This organization is materialized a year later, in 1951, by the Treaty of Paris, which created the European Community of Coal and Steel Community (ECSC).

Since then, May 9 has become one of the European symbols.

This day is celebrated in all 27 Member States of the European Union with hundreds of activities to bring Europe closer to the citizens.
