The Socialist Party rejects mandatory helmet use on the bike because it would use in Murcia (07/05/2013)

Socialist councilors Pedro Lopez and Susana Hernandez in Madrid today attended a meeting in the House of Representatives convened by the Socialist parliamentary group, with mayors of other Spanish cities, and which also involved Zarrías Gaspar, secretary of Cities and Municipal Policy PSOE, Jose Javier Pipe Gomez, president of the Association of Professional Cyclists, Manuel Martin, president of the Coordinating ConBici and former cyclist, Pedro Delgado, to consider measures for the safety of people using bicycles in urban roads.

Socialist councilors have expressed their opposition to the reform of the Rules of the Traffic Department that seeks to impose mandatory helmet use on urban roads.

"This measure is not justified and rejected by all the associations of bicycle users because use will adversely affect both the public service and to hire private bicycle, which lead to a reduction of users and the fall of the demand also hurt business and jobs related to the bicycle industry, so we support an institutional statement Murcia City Council against this proposal, "say the PSOE councilors.

For the Socialist Group, "rather than ease of use, the Government of Rajoy is severely hampering the obligation to go right into a lane urban roads, another measure that increases the chances of overtaking accidents or cars that are parked ".

Also during the meeting, the PSOE councilors have known experiences to promote the use of bicycles in cities like San Sebastian, Barcelona, Zaragoza and Sevilla, which significantly increased the number of users.

"We have felt envious because Murcia has excellent conditions for cycling, but the lack of strong support by the PP government makes the measures taken more marketing character of commitments", said the council .

Therefore, the Socialist Group will continue to defend the need for segregated bike lanes, both in the city and in the villages, communicating strategically and implementation of a real system of public bike rental on the street.
