Applaud Cities promoting cycling in General Traffic Regulations (13/03/2013)

The Network of Cities for Cycling (RCxB) greatly appreciates the increased road safety, promoting cycling and traffic calming measures contained in the new Rules of the road.

Regarding the helmet, the RCxB proposes maintaining the current legislation, which does not require its use on urban roads, and that current studies do not show that helmet use represents a reduction of accidents or deaths from brain and skull injury, however, it does reduce the number of cyclists who cycle for transportation, and users with this reduction would decrease the safety of cyclists.

It is proven that the more cyclists moving, the greater the security, which suggests the need to implement policies that encourage the use of the bike.

It is proposed that the mandatory use of helmets on interurban roads and urban roads used to be voluntary, but recommended.

The RCxB, he held a meeting yesterday in Madrid, agreed to propose that in areas that have a single lane in each direction, moving bikes in the middle lane to promote bicycle safety and make them more visible to drivers of larger vehicles.

Regarding driving on sidewalks of skateboards, roller skates and similar devices, the agreement provides that the same conditions apply to bicycles, ie they can not travel on sidewalks within 3 meters and do so within 1 meter of the facade, and not allow the use of skates and motorized contraptions on the sidewalks.

The new Rules of the road collects all crosswalks should be painted white.

From RCxB is recommended that the use of other colors as they have shown positive results in different municipalities to strengthen the signal.

With the use of approved and non-slip paints are remedied potential problems that could cause these paintings in passing motorcycles.

The Network of Cities for Cycling represents more than 100 cities and transportation agencies Spanish sensitized to the need to promote the use of bicycles and improve services, infrastructure and policies that concern, with the aim of improving mobility and environment.

Currently the president of the association is the Mayor of Murcia, Miguel Ángel Cámara, and vice are in charge of the Barcelona Provincial Council and the municipalities of Madrid, Alcobendas, Santander, Seville and Zaragoza.
