A maternity hospital against the horror

Elna's motherhood, located in the Château d'en Bardou in the French department of Elne, near Perpignan, was an institution founded in 1939 through the efforts of the Swiss nurse, Elisabeth Eidenbez and collaboration of Civil Service International in Switzerland.

Its main mission was to welcome and care for pregnant women Spanish, Jewish or Gypsy, many with young children, who were interned in concentration camps in southeastern France.

Since December 1939 when the first baby was born, there were an average of 20 monthly deliveries attended by volunteer nurses, sent by the Swiss nursing school.

Until 1944 when motherhood was closed by the German army, 597 children were born, becoming "a bubble of life" in the midst of the horror of war.

In 2005 the city of Elne acquired the building in 2009 and opened a permanent exhibition: "The Maternité Suisse 'Elne: a berceau d'au coeur de l'Humanité inhumain".

The exhibition on display at the Museum of the University of Murcia until Friday February 1st is a Spanish version of that exposure.

The activity is organized by Department of Modern History, Contemporary and Latin, Faculty of Arts, School of Nursing and the University Museum.

Their coordination is provided by Alicia Alted, (UNED, AEMIC and member of the Scientific Council of the Motherhood of Elna), Dolores Fernandez (UCM and AEMIC), Concepción Ybarra (UNED) and Mary embodies Nicolas Marin (University of Murcia).
