The University of Murcia recognizes the recovery project Cartagena Barrio Roman Forum (13/12/2012)

The seat of the Rector of the University of Murcia has welcomed today the recognition that the educational institution has offered comprehensive project of rehabilitation and conservation Quarter Pinwheel Roman Forum (Cartagena), which has won the national recovery and conservation of cultural organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.

The project, which the jury praised the "quality of its multidisciplinary intervention", is directed since 2008 by Professor of Archaeology at the University of Murcia José Miguel Noguera, who has been received along with other members of his team for the rector, José Antonio Cobacho.

Noguera's work and archaeological research team includes the restoration of cultural and museum and dissemination of Insula I called Pinwheel Archaeological Park, in the city of Cartagena.

It is a block from the Roman colony of Carthago Nova (dated to the first century AD) of 2,500 square meters and bounded by several streets with two buildings in excellent condition: the call of the court building and a spa with corresponding peristyle.

Since its inception in February 2008, the conservation and restoration works have also become a key element in the regeneration of the area north of historic Cartagena, which was downgraded from a planning point of view, social and economic.

In fact, other aspects taken into account by the jury were "the comprehensive nature of the intervention, the contribution is for the rehabilitation of the urban and economic development of the central area of ​​the city of Cartagena, as well as the joint composition the team that made the project ".

During the reception held in the building of Convalescence, Professor José Miguel Noguera thanked the technical and economic effort of the Autonomous Region and the city of Cartagena and emphasized that it adds value to the enjoyment of a broad public sector ancient Roman city.

The event also involved the CEO of Cultural Property in the Region, Francisco Gimenez, who underlined the importance of cultural heritage for tourism and has referred to the Roman Forum Area as one of the great assets of the cultural and tourism in the city of Cartagena.

By the University of Murcia, the Vice Chancellor for Research and International Relations, Gaspar Ros, said the interdisciplinary nature of a project with the collaboration of archaeologists, conservators, architects, photographers, designers, surveyors and specialists orthophotography and resources graphics.

The rector, José Antonio Cobacho, took the floor last to show their appreciation for the research undertaken in the field of archeology and the various projects that the University of Murcia place in Cartagena.

Work on the reel have had the support of scientific research project "Rome and the provincial capitals of Hispania", funded by the Ministry of Research, Ministry of Science and Innovation under the National R + D + i .

The project also forms part since 2009 of the Working Methods of analysis and interpretation in Roman architecture of Hispania, led by the universities of Murcia, Rovira i Virgili of Tarragona and Merida Archaeology Institute (CSIC).
