Exhibition: Times of exile and solidarity (10/12/2012)

"Motherhood Swiss Elna. Times of exile and solidarity" is the title of the exhibition that opens on December 11 at the Museum of the University of Murcia at 20 hours in a presentation that will be provided by Nicholas Encarna Marín, Professor of Contemporary History and curator of the exhibition in Murcia.

Elna's motherhood, located in the Château d'en Bardou in the French department of Elne, near Perpignan, was an institution founded in 1939 through the efforts of the Swiss nurse, Elisabeth Eidenbez and collaboration of Civil Service International in Switzerland.

Its main mission was to welcome and care for pregnant women Spanish, Jewish or Gypsy, many with young children, who were interned in concentration camps in southeastern France.

The International Red Cross was their mainstay, providing food, medicine bottles, but also included other contributions from individuals.

Motherhood had about 50 beds and each room was identified with the name of a Spanish city, French or Swiss.

Since December 1939 when the first baby was born, there were an average of 20 monthly deliveries attended by volunteer nurses, sent by the Swiss nursing school.

Until 1944 when motherhood was closed by the German army, 597 children were born.

In 2005 the city of Elne acquired the building in 2009 and opened a permanent exhibition: The Maternité Suisse 'Elne: a berceau d'au coeur de l'Humanité inhumain.

The exhibition on display at the University of Murcia is a Spanish version of that exposure.

The exhibition will run between December 11 and February 1.

In closing, it held a seminar in February that will include a documentary on "The Motherhood d 'Elne, place of memory and life" by Juan Ramon Fernandez Maroto and Dolores and lectures on the humanitarian and human rights by voluntary organizations during periods of war and wars of the twentieth century.

The activity is organized by the Faculty of Nursing and Letters, the University Museum and the Cultural Service of the University of Murcia.
