Half the Murcia with over 65 senior centers used the City (01/10/2012)

The network, which consists today of 76 centers, implies the existence of equipment for every 763 inhabitants exceeding that age.

The Mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara, inaugurated the conference organized on the occasion of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations.

More than half of people over 65 living in Murcia are network partners municipal social centers.

Specifically, of the 61,000 people that pass this age, 32,500 belong to one of the 76 social facilities constructed by the City and placed at their service.

This fact has been highlighted today by the Mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara, at the opening of the conference organized by the Department of Social Welfare on the occasion of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, held to coincide with the International Day of the Elderly.

In addition to the wide network of community centers, the role that older people have in municipal politics is reflected in the quantity and quality of services, facilities and projects that the Department of Health and Social Welfare has launched.

For funding, 85% of the budget of its budget, which in 2012 amounted to EUR 8.7 million -9.2 million when including spending-center network, goes to programs for seniors.

In his speech, the Mayor has made special reference to the services managed by the City aimed at increasing the quality of life of this population.

In this regard, the Chamber recalled the most significant and defendants, among which are:

- Home Care Service: 3385 beneficiaries currently has.

In 2011, with thousand users less, the budget was 4.7 million which were funded with 371,700 hours of care.

- Telecare Service: since its introduction in 1995, with 220 beneficiaries, has continued to grow to 3033 to date users and an expense of 700,000 euros.

Of the 2,661 registered beneficiaries last year, 28% were older than 75 years and 53% over 80.

- Meals on Wheels Service: Launched in 2006, the last year 73,638 meals were served.

With an annual cost of 330,000 euros, it currently benefiting 300 families.

- Family Respite Service: Created in 2002, its current spending per year is 235,000.

In 2011 it provided 13,942 hours of service and support to 853 caregivers.

Theatre, music and rondalla

During the meeting, held at the Teatro Circo Murcia, there have been municipal resources aimed at older people and there have been two round tables: one with the participation of users of different services and care programs such as Day Care Center , Coexistence between Generations, Reading Clubs, Centres for the Elderly, the second has met the poet Denise Garcia and Jose Maria Falgas painter, active aging example.

Finally, the event concluded with a skit representing theatrical and musical performances by various groups Social Centres for the Elderly.

The workshops are presented as an opportunity to promote the exchange of experiences and good practices in relation to raising active aging and intergenerational solidarity and to report on municipal resources are developed, favoring the older feel heard, represented and protagonists of all the events planned.
