The economic crisis reduced absenteeism, according to a doctoral thesis at the University of Murcia (04/09/2012)

The doctoral thesis defended at the University of Murcia by Maria Garcia Villaplana notes among its conclusions, absenteeism reduction that occurs in times of economic crisis, the most in men, casual and contract workers in smaller firms .

Villaplana Garcia, who has obtained excellent cum laude for his work, studied more than 700,000 cases of absence due to disability (ITCC) in Spain in the period 2005/2010.

The thesis analyzes how they influence worker characteristics, business, labor conditions and the environment (economic cycle, crisis and unemployment) in the grounds of sickness absence from work.

The results indicate a higher percentage of women absenteeism among workers in the country, where they have a permanent job and are hired as permanent or fixed-discontinuous, and in the service sector in industrialized areas.

It also reflects a higher rate of absenteeism among workers with lower average tenure in their companies, among older employees and those hired part-time.

In regard to the median duration of ITCC, the most important variable is age, with further increases duration of absenteeism as this.

The analysis of the temporal distribution of the frequency of the ITCC shows variations depending on day of week and time of year.

Stresses the higher frequency of absence due to disability Mondays and casualties increased after the end of the holidays and holiday periods.

Regarding the evolution of indicators of absenteeism during the period of study, it is found that the change in the economic cycle influences the rate of absenteeism and on days lost, and in both cases less in times of crisis .

Job instability, however, does not exert a significant effect on the average duration of the processes of absence due to disability.

The thesis was directed by Mariano Mariano García Izquierdo and Pedro Meseguer, both professors in the Department of Psychiatry and Social Psychology at the University of Murcia, to which the author belongs.
