Mary Miller was the first female professor at the University of Murcia (24/07/2012)

The lexicographer and archivist Mary Miller, author of the essential "use of Spanish Dictionary" was the first woman who achieved the status of professor at the University of Murcia, according to research by Maria Isabel Segura and Juan Carlos Arguelles published in the journal Murgetana , published by the Real Academia Alfonso X the Wise.

Maria Isabel Segura, section chief of the Historical Archive of the Library of the University of Murcia, and Juan Carlos Arguelles, professor of biology at the same institution, found in his article the minutes of the Board of Faculty of Arts held on February 29, 1929, in agreeing the appointment of Mary Miller as an assistant professor.

The minutes, which is signed by the then rector, José Loustau, and Professor Victor Sanchez, secretary of the Faculty, makes express reference to its status as the first teacher training institution to highlight that it is "... representative of the feminine element first time at the University of Murcia; companion who greets the Faculty with all the exquisite distinction and deserves merit the high regard of the Board ..... ".

At a meeting held just a month later, the president announced that Loustau has realized timely appointment to interested, indicating that the application period corresponds "to the rest of the academic year," having been posesionada of office.

The teaching of Miller at the University of Murcia did not extend beyond that year, leaving on record have been designated academic vocal member of the Examining Board on the History of Spain for official and unofficial student.

The authors have not found in the Archive of the University more information about their teaching duties or other information concerning your personal file and pay.

By contrast, extensive documentation itself consists of the college career of her husband, Fernando Ramon Ferrando, Professor of Physics at the University of Murcia where he met Maria Moliner.

Mary arrived in Murcia in 1924 to work as archivist of the tax office, the city where he met Ramon Ferrando (married in Sagunto) and where his two eldest sons were born.

The couple remained in the capital of the Segura until 1929, when he moved to Valencia, where Mary also took charge of Stock of the Treasury.
