Green light for the restoration of the historic bust in Sanchez Madrigal tribute to the poet (29/06/2012)

The sculpture by the great plans shall be submitted in the next few days to a deep cleaning and consolidation.

The piece, which opened during the Fair of 1927, has suffered several attacks in its history.

The City of Murcia, through MurciaEscultura program and the Department of Culture, has promoted the rehabilitation of the old bust in memory of poet Ricardo Sánchez Madrigal, an outstanding work of the great sculptor Jose Planes which is located opposite the Palace of Almudí.

Madrigal Sanchez, an engineer, was born in Murcia in 1845 and died in 1925.

He enjoyed great fame in the city by the direction of the newspaper La Verdad and for his outstanding creative work, especially for the production of poems and plays.

At his death, the municipality of Murcia promoted a popular gathering to honor his memory with a bust, which eventually carved the great Murcian sculptor Jose Planes.

The bust was inaugurated on April 7, 1926, during the Feria de Murcia.

Over the last 9 decades, the work has suffered several attacks, including beheadings are two.

The restoration of the monument will return all the splendor it had to consolidate and reinforce its base cracks, which had numerous fractures.

The City Council is considering moving the bust elsewhere in the environment to prevent moisture of the grass on which it sits.
