End of ongoing literacy program for women of La Paz and La Fame (20/06/2012)

Sixteen Roma women in the neighborhoods of La Paz and La Fama have participated in a literacy course in order to improve their training to enter the labor market.

The Councillor for Health and Social Welfare, María del Carmen Pelegrin, and Equality Policy and Development Cooperation, Alicia Barquero, participated today in the presentation of diplomas which ends this year.

Women themselves requested a training course for professionals in social services in these two neighborhoods, and have also participated in a career counseling workshop, conducted in collaboration with the Informajoven of the Youth Council.

Services considered most appropriate was to provide a literacy course, since most of the participants had difficulties in literacy and basic math, not fulfilling the conditions necessary to pursue them in Adult Education.

The course is conducted in collaboration with FSG.

The course began on April 18, 2012.

In the first sessions the number of participants ranged from a low of 12 and a maximum of 26.

Classes were held Wednesday and Friday from 10.00 to 12.00 pm in the Classroom Workshop Women's Center of Fame.

Some of the participants have young children without the compulsory school age who were cared for while their mothers were in class for 5 volunteers coordinated by the Area Community Intervention Municipal Center of Social Services 'Ciudad de Murcia'.

For women participating in the course are more involved set their own rules as punctuality, respect, pick up the classroom at the end, and not miss more than three classes without justification.

In this first course is the use of working capital, the noun, gender and number, addition and subtraction.

The workshop, which ends today with the presentation of diplomas will resume after the summer.

The course participants have completed all the proposed activities, no matter the difficulty, and helping other women.

Also, the students have said that not only are happy with what they learn, but they feel better about themselves, are more capable and self-esteem has improved.

This project will also work on other aspects that contribute to improving the quality of life of these women, increasing knowledge and skills aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and prevent risk factors.
