Callisto, a network to understand the Sun (17/05/2012)

A scientific team from the University of Zürich (ETH) moved this month from April to our country for a campaign of measurements of electromagnetic noise.

The goal?

The possible incorporation of Spain into the international scientific network Callisto, dedicated to the study of solar physics, through the installation of several radio telescopes.

Callisto The network keeps track of solar activity 24 hours a day through its network of antennas located throughout the world in order to understand the causes of the eruptions, storms and solar flares, despite having been , each time causing more havoc with power grids and electronic devices land.

But in addition to its scientific character, Callisto has a very informative and humanitarian value.

Schoolchildren visiting these small observatories can observe the sun even on cloudy days and many are local students from high school or college who design and build antennas, write programs for data collection or analyzes the received signals.

In addition, this network makes a special effort to reach developing countries (Kenya, Mongolia, Korea, India, Costa Rica, ...), science as an engine instilling education and growth.

The Spanish team, comprising researchers FISPAC Group (Particle Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology), University of Murcia, the Space Research Group SRG at the University of Alcala de Henares and Mantiel Observatory, made with the Swiss team measures at various locations.

In one of them, Peralejos of trout in the Upper Tajo guadalajareño found "the lowest level of interference from all the countries visited" in the words of Professor Monstein.

These spectacular results in the range between 40 MHz and 1 GHz will be the subject of a communication in an international conference this summer and the basis of a grant application to the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology.

Researchers have decided to install at the moment, a demonstrator in Sigüenza and a detector with higher performance in Peralejos and it is possible in the future to install one in our region.
