The Mayor presents "Muac", the new brand of small businesses Murcia (09/05/2012)

According to the Strategic Action Plan for the Municipality Retail presented today, the challenges go through technological modernization, increased professional qualifications and the balance between cooperation and competition on traders.

The traditional trade of neighborhoods and districts employs over 20,000 people and has a 35% regional sector.

Muac (Murcia Commercial Area) is the new single brand retail neighborhoods and districts of Murcia.

Mayor Miguel Angel House, accompanied by Councillor for Employment, Trade and Enterprise, José María Tortosa, has presented this morning, and the Strategic Action Plan for the Municipality Retail, issued in response to the interest of the City and of business associations to promote measures to boost the commercial areas and attract new customers.

At the same time, the draft document aims to create networks of trust and cooperation in traditional shops that allow improving the competitiveness of retail versus other types of trade, and providing access to new entrepreneurs to business .

The presentation of both initiatives has attended in the act of the representatives of trade associations of the municipality: Begoña Davalos, Commercial Area Merchants Association Center Murcia, Antonio Lopez, Vistalegre Merchants Association, Jose Onate, Merchants Association Barrio del Carmen, Thomas Martinez, Entrepreneurs and Business Owners Association of Garres, Maria Isabel Espinosa, Association of Businesses and Service Stables, Carmen Piñero, Triangle Traders Association of Murcia, Antonio Mejias, Zarandona Merchants Association, Jose Francisco Nicolas , Beniaján Merchants Association, Juan Antonio Garcia-Grajalva Independent Business Association Barrio del Carmen, and Carmen Martinez Merchants Association "Our Lady of Lourdes" of the Fleet.

He has also attended Francisco Carreno, head of the Observatory's Asomada University of Murcia, who designed the Strategic Action Plan for the sector.

Retail trade accounts for more than 20,000 jobs in the city and houses 35% of the total regional area.

To survive, you will need to respond to new challenges that are necessarily tied to technological modernization, increased professional qualifications and the balance between cooperation and competition among local entrepreneurs.

The strategic plan provides a snapshot of the sector, according to which the general features of traditional Murcian trade are:

- Surface limited, usually below 90 m2

- Lack of jobs per establishment

- Level of limited education and low penetration of ICT

- Limited collaboration between businesses

- Posting of regular shopping areas

- New consumer habits

Given this situation, the emergence of the economic crisis has had some positive consequences, such as attitude more inclined towards modernization of the stores or increased contacts between entrepreneurs.

Strategic lines

On the other hand, some traditional trade strengths of neighborhoods and districts highlighted in the document are customer loyalty, the ability of businesses to provide services designed to measure their customers and the bonds of trust that are usually set between merchant and customer.

By contrast, the main difficulties identified are the lack of appropriate fora, the atomization of the commercial fabric, the perception of the stores of the same trade as competition and the rest as something alien.

In this connect, the plan advised working to improve the "coopetition" and establish collaboration mechanisms that contribute to cost reduction.

The strategic proposals are that:

- Business Communication: Promote and publicize the various types of existing retail

- Revitalize commercial areas: Trying to attract new customers to the different shopping areas

- Promote cooperation between retailers and their joint participation in cooperative networks

- Training and retraining of human capital

- Improving competitiveness

- New Entrepreneurs

After the x-sector, and outlined the diagnosis, collaboration between the Department of Employment, Trade and Enterprise and the various associations representing small businesses consensuarán measures to develop and follow up.

Among the impending actions will be implemented include the presentation of an interactive website aimed at strengthening the business of the squares of supplies that include both online shopping and service delivery.

There are also plans to reach agreements with technology companies to develop commercial applications to disseminate information via smartphones.
