Ecologists in Action complaint particulate air pollution in Murcia city (06/02/2012)

Ecologists in Action has approached the Ministry of Presidency claiming that, during the month of January, eight days were recorded exceedances of the PM10 limit values ​​microparticles.

These official data, recorded by the measuring station of St. Basil, are the symptom of deterioration in Murcia city and the surrounding air quality by contamination of microparticles PM10.

State law establishes pollution by microparticles daily limit value of 50 micrograms per cubic meter of PM10.

This value has been exceeded for eight days in January with two peaks of pollution, more than 70 micrograms per cubic meter, 11 and 25 January.

The maximum number of days with exceedances established by the regulations is 35 per year.

The direct origins of deteriorating air quality microparticles PM10 pollution in the city of Murcia and its surroundings are mainly traffic emissions and to a lesser extent, the industrial activities that can add an occasional natural intrusions of Saharan dust especially during the summer.

This pollution has an impact on public health, as these microparticles can penetrate to the lower respiratory tract and cause serious disease to the ducts and respiratory system.

PM10 particles can cause respiratory diseases, asthma, aggravation of allergic diseases and cardiovascular problems.

According to the WHO report "Air Quality and Health", it is estimated that air pollution, caused mainly by traffic and some industrial activities, causes approximately two million premature deaths annually worldwide, of which over 16,000 are produced in Spain.

Ecologists in Action has repeatedly reiterated both the regional government and the Municipality of Murcia, the need for competent authorities do not minimize the problem of air quality in Murcia and its environment and develop preventive measures for these episodes.

This environmental organization, claims that actions are carried out control traffic emissions in the context of Sustainable Mobility Plan and the development of Action Plans to reduce pollution of the town and surroundings.
