The University of Murcia program activities to encourage healthy habits in the elderly (16/01/2012)

The University of Murcia, through its Research Institute on Aging, held during 2012, "European Year on Active Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity," education and outreach activities to encourage healthy habits in older people.

The full program of work has been presented today at the Rectory building for the institute's director, Professor of Pathology Vicente Vicente Ortega.

Professor Vicente Ortega said that one of the fundamental purposes of the Institute is aimed to raise awareness of the importance of acquiring habits led to an active and healthy aging.

This issue is more important, said the professor, if we consider that the provisions of the National Institute of Statistics for 2040 indicate that 31% of the Spanish population will be over 65 years.

To accomplish this work of awareness, the Institute, in collaboration with the Senior Hall of the University and the College of Physicians, has scheduled a series of lectures starts Wednesday, January 18, Professor José Antonio Lozano Teruel with a presentation on "Aging and Science" (Hall of the College of Physicians, at 17:30 hours).

The series will address issues such as physical activity to age positively, attention to the Unit, the importance of a positive attitude, emotional aging, how to get a balanced diet, smoking, healthy sexuality in aging, cancer prevention and Sleep disorders in the elderly.

With regard to training activities, the Vice Chancellor of Strategic Development and Training, Fernando Martin, presented the Master's and Ph.D. in Aging and the I Master in Palliative Care, which will be the first to be delivered in the Spanish university system on this aspect of aging.

In addition, the Research Institute on Aging is a pioneer in imparting a course of greater care experts, who offered in collaboration with the municipalities of San Javier, Cotillas Towers and Molina de Segura.

During the ceremony, the rector of International Relations and Research Assistant, Gaspar Ros, released the Institute's multidisciplinary project on preventive factors for achieving a healthy and active aging.

It is, in the words of Vicente Vicente, to study all the factors-visual, auditory, oral, cardiovascular, mental, physical, socio-economic, educational, ethical and legal-that may influence the healthy aging.

The rector, José Antonio Cobacho, closed the press conference praising the research done at the Institute of "one of the main problems in Spain in particular and the Western world in general: aging and its many ramifications in the field of health, economy, etc..

The Institute for Aging Research, the first of its kind in Spain, consists of a multidisciplinary team of 120 researchers (18 centers and 33 research groups) and 30 fellows.
