The bear Fabila Terra Natura Murcia celebrates its twentieth anniversary with a fruit tart (13/01/2012)

The longest bear that lives in nature and animal park Terra Natura Murcia, Fabila, celebrated its twentieth birthday this morning a very special way.

The brown bear (Ursus arctos) has devoured a cake, together with some of their offspring, which has been developed by caregivers with 40 kilos of fruit and mixed vegetables such as apples, pears, carrots and pineapples, among other foods.

College students Espinardo The Miraculous (Murcia) have come to the facility to witness the celebration.

Fabila was born in Sobrón (Álava) in 1992 and five years later was moved to Murcia with another male.

Since then, this bear has given birth to 12 cubs, some of which have been transferred to other zoos to establish new groups of this kind in such centers.

The captive breeding of these animals is of great value, since their survival is threatened.

The first two babies that had Fabila in 1998 were the first bears were born in captivity in Murcia.

These offspring, called Yaqui and neck, have grown to 14 and now share with their mother plant and the rest of the pack.

Currently, Terra Natura Murcia facilities have seven brown bears.

Bears are a flagship species of the Iberian peninsula are in danger of extinction.

Experts estimate that the number of these individuals in the wild is between 100 and 120 approximately.

Mainly inhabit forested areas of northern Spain.

One of the most important features of these specimens is hibernation, an adaptive mechanism used to withstand the harsh winters and prepare for the breeding season.

They usually have litters of one to three cubs, although depends on how old you are the mother.
