The University of Murcia make an Arabic dictionary online (01/12/2011)

The research group of Arab Studies at the University of Murcia has led the launch of an online dictionary árabe-español/español-árabe, which will facilitate teaching students the language and also serve for Arab students learning Spanish.

The dictionary has been launched today at the Faculty of Arts for its administrators, faculty Sebastian and Maria Victoria Aguilar Antonio Giménez Reillo, who coordinated the group of Spanish and foreign researchers who have participated in its preparation.

The Coordinator explained that the great value of the dictionary is that it reflects the current use of Arabic, unlike the treatment given in the rest of Spain, where he taught as if it were a classical language.

The dictionary, added, incorporates contextual reference of words that are queried, etymological explanations and information on how to pronounce.

The rector of the University, José Antonio Cobacho, who attended the presentation ceremony, congratulated the research team for their work, which has placed the institution "as a leading university to tackling these studies."

The rector of Coordination and Communication, María Ángeles Esteban, stressed the online dictionary, "which is going to make it more accessible to students" as well as taking care of the Arabic, "fourth language by number of speakers and increasingly important ".

The project has been funded by the Ministry of Education and Science and the Seneca Foundation, whose director, Antonio González, was also present on the spot.
