60% of cancer patients survive the disease thanks to advances in radiotherapy (03/11/2011)

Technological advances in radiation oncology are a survival rate of the disease 60%, as revealed today at the University of Murcia in the opening of the International Master in Advanced Technological Applications in Radiation Oncology.

Recent advances in radiotherapy, continued training of specialists in this area of ​​oncology and the need to create a platform for research in this field are the objectives of the Masters, which begins its third edition with ten students from different countries.

The scientific director of the Master, Felipe Calvo, chief of Oncology at the Hospital Gregorio Maranon de Madrid, said the high scientific level reaching participants is endorsed by the possibility to have access to advanced technologies for the treatment of cancer radiotherapy .

Calvo also stressed the fundamental importance of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Murcia for the operation of a graduate that has no equivalent in Spanish universities, he said, and that in his two years of operation has provided ongoing training and highly specialized 24 students from countries such as Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Italy, Costa Rica, Russia, Venezuela, Honduras, Cuba, Albania, Ecuador, Guatemala, Morocco and Spain.

During the opening ceremony, held at the offices of Chancellor of the University, the director of FFIS, Juan Pedro Serna, referred to the virtual nature of the studies, which allows students in near real time update all the speeches, videos and lectures, and places the region of Murcia as a reference in this field worldwide.

The Vice Chancellor for Institutional Relations and Health Sciences, University of Murcia, Manuel Vidal, chaired this event, which was read last term memory, resulting in figures of more than 160 teachers, of which 93 belong to Oncology departments of major Spanish hospitals.
