"Murcia is now a model city in efficient and sustainable management of waste" (22/09/2011)

The Mayor presides over the presentation of the new street cleaning service, characterized by the use of renewable energy and a cleaner vehicle fleet.

The modernization of the service, which incorporates the latest technology allows the use of media that require less water consumption, reduce noise emissions and lessen the carbon footprint of more than 50%.

About 750 people work in cleaning and waste management of Murcia.

Service was extended to new areas of growth of neighborhoods and districts and incorporated new features such as emergency care or a unique device for the removal of graffiti, posters and stickers.

In the field of energy, the new urban cleaning and waste management policy is part of the promotion of clean and renewable energies, arising from compliance with the Kyoto Protocol.

In this sense, the reduction of greenhouse gases that cause the new contract is very significant, to 6,485,237 tonnes of CO2 equivalent avoided, which has a direct impact on improving air quality.

The carbon footprint is also generated highly favorable, rising from about 36,000 current annual teq CO2 to CO2 teq 15,700 per year in the development of the service, a reduction of 56%.

A cluster innovation environment

On the other hand, one of the most important projects to be developed in Murcia in the coming years is the creation of a reference cluster Environment and Renewable Energy, in collaboration with lawn, created with the aim to promote a new area economic activity that will transform the current Waste Treatment Centre in an area of ​​innovation and opportunity.
