Congress of Genetics, discusses the importance of the human genome in disease (21/09/2011)

The human genome variations between individuals and their role in the onset of certain diseases is one of the issues addressed in the biennial Congress of the Spanish Society of Genetics, held from today until next Friday in the city of Murcia.

The Congress is organized by the Genetics group at the University of Murcia, whose members include the president of the organizing committee, Professor Santiago Torres, who has presented today at the Convalescence the conference program, which consists of four plenary sessions, ten scientific sessions, one hundred panels and Awards 2011 National Genetics.

The inaugural conference will be this afternoon at 19:00 at the Hotel Nelva Murcia (Congress venue) and will be provided by Elliot Meyerowitz, a professor at the prestigious California Institute of Technology (Caltech, USA) and a recognized authority on the field of plant genetics.

The other plenary lectures will correspond to Angela Nieto, researcher in the Neuroscience Institute of Alicante, who will speak on the key genes for human development and cancerous changes, and Miguel Beato, Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona, whose talk is the expression of certain genes.

For its part, the researcher Stefan Mundle, Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics (Germany), whose conference will close the Congress, will speak about his studies of the variations that occur in the human genome that explain certain diseases.

Furthermore, to cover different areas of genetics (human and plant biotechnology, microorganisms, genomics, cytogenetics, etc..), We have included ten sessions with forty scientific oral presentations by relevant Spanish and foreign specialists, with special attention to communications of young researchers.

The interactive part is reserved for so-called "party boards" sessions that aim to combine interactive science informality and playfulness that can be assumed to enjoy a beer or soda while discussing science.

Tomorrow, day 22, (20:00 hours hotel Nelva) will develop the central act of Congress, the National Awards of Genetics Enrique Cerdá Olmedo, professor at the University of Seville, and Badosa Manel Esteller, a researcher at the Institute of Biomedical Research of Bellvitge (IDIBELL).

Esteller has been awarded in the category of basic genetic research, while Esteller, in Applications of Genetics.

The Awards, now in its third year, are sponsored by the Foundation PRYCONSA.

At the presentation ceremony, held at the offices of Chancellor of the University of Murcia, Santiago Torres was accompanied by the Vice Chancellor for Research Excellence and Campus, Juan María Vázquez, who referred to the event as "first order within the Spanish scientist" . http://seg2011murcia.es
