The Government of Spain makes possible the restoration of the Cathedral of Murcia (02/09/2011)

This funding has enabled not only the restoration of the drawers of the sacristy, a room of considerable value cultural heritage and a treasure of religious furniture of the sixteenth century, and today all citizens can enjoy.

It has also allowed to carry out various activities in the chapel of Junterones and the restoration of the first part of the tower, the exterior of the chapels of Vélez and Las Animas and adjacent decks.

The restoration of the Tower of the Cathedral has consisted primarily of completing the exterior vent environment in order to complete the underground boundary treatment of the monument in the street.

In addition, due to the appearance of original patinas in the first part of the tower, has opted for a healthy and consolidation of outstanding items.

In the Chapel of Los Vélez is outstanding items have been returned or missing in the tops of the deck and in the intermediate ledges outside.

In the Chapel of the Souls have been restored lower bodies adjacent to southern side of the Cathedral and the exterior surfaces of these bodies.

Archaeological remains found

The Government delegate recalled that during the conservation work of the Tower appeared archaeological sites, whose excavation has documented the historical substrate of the cathedral and its protection.

Also, when removing the drawers of the sacristy also showed the remains of the original base of support from the cabinet, leaving a witness in situ system of the pedestal base primitive.
