Volunteers from the University of Murcia travel free by train to Lorca to assist in his recovery (13/06/2011)

Eighteen students from the University of Murcia travel by train daily and free of charge, to Lorca to participate in voluntary activities carried out by the educational institution in this city, affected by the earthquakes in May.

The agreement, which was presented today at the Chancellor of the University with the presence of government delegate in Murcia, Rafael González Tovar, is the result of a collaboration agreement between the institution and RENFE and is part of the campaign "A train of Securities", with which the railway company expresses its social commitment.

Murcia University, said its secretary general, Joaquín Lomba, sent from Madrid every day, at the request of the City of Lorca, a minimum of 18 volunteers who specialize in various fields who offer help to those affected by earthquakes.

The aid includes psychological support to those affected, children's activities for children, tutoring, computer support, physiotherapy and body language workshops, among others.

This initiative joins other developed by the University, such as enabling lorquino campus classrooms for high school students can prepare for exams, or the money boxes installed in university departments, aimed at raising funds to rebuild a nursery destroyed by the tremors.

The rector of the University, José Antonio Cobacho thanked RENFE, represented by its manager, city and intercity travelers to the Levant area, Jose Enrique Cortina, social sensitivity shown.

The Government delegate, Rafael Tovar Gonzalez, meanwhile, thanked both the University of Murcia and the company, for its efforts towards restoring normalcy in Lorca.
