Esther Herguedas Intervention in the inaugural meeting of the City of Murcia (11/06/2011)

Inaugural speech in the city of Murcia.

Murcia January 11, 2011

Illustrious and Distinguished authorities, Mr. Mayor, ladies and gentlemen councilmen councilors, representatives of Neighborhood Councils of neighborhoods and districts, representatives of the media, ladies and gentlemen, friends.

On the day we started a new phase of municipal life, I want my first words of gratitude to many people have placed their trust in the candidacy of IU-Greens.

His support for our alternative proposals have allowed at this time we are two representatives that we have to work with all our energy and determination to not disappoint.

Mr. Camara also receive our most sincere congratulations on his re-election, along with the expression of our desire to work in the municipal work in a critical but constructive.

Our dynamic is the same that has characterized so far, maintaining respectful discourse forms with consistency and firmness in our approach, the complaint related to the proposal.

Whenever possible, facilitate consensus and collaboration that benefits all citizens of Murcia from the principles of legality, solidarity and environmental sustainability.

The legislature beginning is marked by the effects of a deep economic crisis whose end does not seem near as to the consequences of the lack of employment must be added the problems associated with high levels of household debt.

Under these conditions, job creation and protection of our citizens should be the fundamental objectives of any administration.

While the first goal we do not have too many responsibilities at the municipal level, it is possible to provide the means to promote employment policies or other, some types of engagement or other.

And for that we should start setting an example as an institution, paying as soon as possible to suppliers, especially small businesses and self-promoting and conditioning public employment contracts to the City Council to guarantee the rights and social wage subcontracted workers.

It is unacceptable that under the cover of crisis you need to remove the rights won after many years of struggle considered privileged.

The municipal institution in any way can not tolerate the social decline would adversely affect their neighbors and therefore their town, much less become a participant of it.

The protection of people affected by the crisis becomes urgent.

It is necessary to strengthen social services, because they come very difficult times and many families Murcia and have nothing left.

Faced with the rescue of banks is necessary for the council to overturn the defense of those who have jobs can not lose everything and rescue and protect families at risk of losing their homes, their children, their lives.

Every effort will defend public services against privatization, because they are key instruments to respond to citizen needs.

Universal access under the same conditions to services such as education, health or culture, is implementing the criteria of equity and justice will always permeate our work.

From the municipal group of IU-Greens will work to make our city a place of friendly coexistence and therefore defend democracy in urban planning.

We want a socially and environmentally sustainable city, that holds the garden and heritage, which effectively protects our natural areas.

A city on a human scale, with an equitable distribution of resources, with streets and gardens, plazas designed to invite the citizen meeting, which guarantee the right to housing and the right to mobility through traffic calming and commitment to public transport and cycling.

A municipality that meets the needs of all people, youth, children, the elderly, women and which encourages tolerance and respect for cultural diversity.

In this area of coexistence, we believe that we must all ask ourselves the challenge of deepening democratic municipal life.

Recent surveys tend to confirm the large gap between those who hold public representation and our constituents.

The crisis of confidence in institutions and political parties makes many people feel that what is called "political class" is itself a problem.

Not to deny the validity of the results expressed in the polls but also promote a reflection on the quality of our democracy.

No doubt the strength of the vote gives legitimacy, but have a majority in votes does not mean it is right.

If you really aspire to be representatives of our constituents we must never lose sight or stop listening to the voice of the street.

At this time, in our country and in our municipality is a significant movement that is shifting the political debate to the streets and squares.

The crisis has awakened from lethargy to a citizenry that retrieves a voice long silent or asleep.

The movement grows, and although some endeavor to disqualify him, proved to have the momentum of a new young generation as well prepared as disappointed and little by little they are adding people from different backgrounds and generations.

Anyone who participates as an ordinary citizen in these discussion forums are settling on our streets and squares recognize your hand to your neighbor, your grocer, your child's teacher, the unemployed, the medical health center, a the student, the immigrant ... to our neighbors who claim their right to information and consultation.

This institution can be a blindfold on and deepen its gap with the public and start taking note of what you call our neighbors.

If you opt for the latter would only perform a duty which is imposed by its very nature - the local scene is a prime area for the development of citizen participation experiences and developments to which is bound by pure logic: while our society, the contents of political life and the tools with which we communicate have changed radically in recent years, institutions have not.

Is it time to move towards more fair to introduce elements of real democracy.

Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen councilmen councilors, friends, today we have the opportunity to write a new chapter in the history of our town and our neighbors she claims to be leading a story or collective will or will not be.

Thank you very much
