Enrique Ujaldón stresses that will "technically challenging" and constitute "the gateway to the Islamic Murcia"

The Director of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage, Enrique Ujaldón, today the basis for the ideas competition, with the intervention of a jury, to define the Interpretation Centre in Murcia medieval archaeological site of San Esteban, to keep the archaeological remains in a space in which to create a museum for public visits.

Ujaldón explained that the future center "will become the gateway to the Islamic Murcia, where visitors learn about the past heritage of the city and from where it will link the heritage tours."

In this regard, he recalled that in recent years there has been an "important" work to restore the Islamic past and mentioned the recovery of the Oratory of San Juan de Dios, the Great Wall of Verona, the Convent of Santa Clara and sections of wall through the city, among others.

In addition, he continued, "we want a living space, so there will be an area of ​​archaeological reserve, so visitors can learn 'in situ' works are being carried out at the site.

The purpose of this competition is the selection of six integrated proposals that define the best solutions in relation to spatial aspects, architectural, archaeological and museological restoration and the clarification for the archaeological remains of the Body of St. Stephen and in the context of a Interpretation Center of Medieval Murcia.

So, be granted a maximum of six awards of 8,640 euros each.

The contest may be canceled only if the jury is unanimous that none of the projects presented is sufficiently satisfactory for the objectives of the competition.

Centre accessible

The center should be approached with total accessibility criteria for people with reduced immobility.

The space also will accommodate an area of ​​access control point, slogan, lobby, shop and toilets.

A permanent exhibition area will possess sufficient flexibility to allow evolution of the center and permit the continuation of excavations and studies needed and their progressive incorporation into the contents hereof.

It should also be an area of ​​classrooms, workshops and activities, as well as administration and research area and an area of ​​services and facilities.

The sum of the floor space of 1,470 square meters is more the 10,300 meters square occupied by the ruins.

Participating teams must have a degree in History and an expert in restoration, both of proven experience, something that, to quote Henry Ujaldón, "is indispensable, because this project will involve a technical and professional challenge which, to insurance, provide pleasant surprises. "

The maximum amount of all the works and actions to bring the proposals (architectural, development, performance archaeological and museological restoration of the remains), excluding costs for the equipment of the Centre and the mounting of the permanent exhibition will 20 million euros.

This maximum amount may not be exceeded in any case for the proposals submitted to the contest.

Composition of jury

The jury is composed of the secretary general of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Director of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage or his representative, the mayor of Murcia, an architect appointed by the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Spain, an architect appointed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, an architect appointed by the Official College of Architects of Murcia, an archaeologist appointed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, an architect appointed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on a proposal from the Commission of Experts the archaeological remains of San Esteban, a representative of the General Comptroller of the region and legal counsel of the Legal Service of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The jury will be assisted by a technical committee.
