The National Police dismantled a plot devoted to the organization of marriages of convenience in Murcia (20/05/2011)

Fourteen arrested for forgery and criminal group integration

National Police agents have broken up an organization dedicated to organizing marriages of convenience in Murcia, designed to facilitate the regularization of immigrants in Spain.

The investigation began earlier this year when it detected a number of applications for adjustment based on marriage ties that could have been established to evade the law and with the sole purpose of one party, illegal aliens are exploited the benefits granted to the families of nationals of Member States of the European Union on entry, stay and work in Spain, getting a family permit "Community residence" under Royal Decree 240/07, dated 16 February, on entry, free movement and residence in Spain of nationals of the Member States of the European Union and other States party to the agreement on the European Economic Area.

After analyzing the documentation presented in these regularization procedures, we could detect a number of characteristics common to most marriages investigated, such as the previous situation of irregularity in Spanish territory of contracting Nigerians, home setting a hypothetical common the parties, a profile in the Spanish contracting and the involvement of witnesses who appeared at the same time as spouses in other matters, or, more prominently, the falsity of much of the documents in the case of marriage, such as passports, certificates of baptism, premarital courses or documents issued by Nigerian authorities such as statements of age or marital status legalized counterfeit stamps.

Once gathered the data necessary to highlight the offense, during the second week of May established a huge police presence aimed at the appropriate location and arrest of suspects.

Thus, during the 9th and May 10th was held in Murcia the arrest of six persons of Spanish nationality and for two days, proceeded to arrest eight people in Alicante, seven Spanish nationals and a Nigerian.

For all the crimes they are accused of forgery and criminal group integration.

So far, eighteen have been detected regularization procedures based on these spurious marriages, although researchers do not rule out that the task of document analysis can bring out more cases fraudulent.

The amounts obtained by members of the organization for all the paperwork of marriage ranged between 10,000 and 12,000 euros, of which between 1,000 and 2,500 were delivered to the Spanish who paid to be listed as spouses.

The operation was carried out by the Provincial Brigade Aliens and Frontiers of Murcia, with the collaboration of the Central Brigade Network of UCRIF Illegal Immigration (Unit against Immigration and Counterfeiting Network) Central and Provincial Brigade of the Immigration and Frontiers of Alicante.
