Researchers at the University of Murcia collaborate on the development of a sensor for detecting mercury in water (10/05/2011)

Excellence Group Heterocycles Chemistry, University of Murcia has participated in developing a sensor capable of detecting in real time the levels of mercury in water.

The study, conducted in collaboration with the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona from CSIC and the University of Regensburg (Germany) has been published in the journal Chemical Communications. "

The contribution of the group at the University of Murcia, whose principal investigator is Pedro Molina Buendía, has been the design of the mercury cation receptor molecule.

These organic molecules undergo color change or fluorescence in the presence of toxic metals and, when incorporated into the surface of gold, generating devices that allow the detection of water pollution level.

Environmental pollution by mercury is a research area of great social concern, as the accumulation of this highly volatile compound in soil or in water facilitates its incorporation into plants and fish and therefore the food chain the human body.
