"Russia today is no threat to anyone" (19/04/2011)

Sokolov UCAM discussed in NATO-Russia relations, in the cycle `The new NATO strategic concept 'that the San Antonio Catholic University is hosting the April 12 to May 11

"Russia today is no threat to anyone, as confirmed by the NATO strategists themselves."

This forceful was the Director of Political Affairs of the Russian Embassy in Spain, Dimitri Sokolov, who recently taught at the Universidad Catolica San Antonio de Murcia (UCAM), the conference `The NATO-Russia relations."

The activity, part of the cycle 'The new strategic concept of NATO ", organized by the Department for International Relations and Communication, meet at the UCAM until May 11, leading experts in security and defense will discuss the new concept Strategic Partnership, in conjunction with nuclear weapons, cyber attacks, international terrorism, environmental disasters, energy security or organized crime.

Dimitri Sokolov said that the process of NATO expansion eastward, taken during the 90's, is not perceived positively in Russia and said that after the demise of the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact, Russia proposed to create a collective defense system in Europe.

"It was felt that NATO had fulfilled its duties, but nevertheless getting closer to our borders, laying new military facilities in countries that previously had been part of the former USSR or the Warsaw Pact."

Then, the Russian diplomat was asked why?, And argued that the threats today to the Euro-Atlantic area, not from countries placed in this area.

"Now we all face and asymmetric cross-border threats such as terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, piracy, organized crime, drug trafficking, to natural disasters. The Russian government believes that we must focus on real threats and not imaginary" he said.
