The City Council is working to stem the cholera epidemic in Haiti (15/03/2011)

Has collaboration agreements with Fire in Action, Caritas Diocesan and Spanish Red Cross

Councilmember Employment, Civil Protection and Development Cooperation, Beatriz Hontoria, has signed three cooperation agreements with Fire in Action, Diocesan Caritas of Murcia and the Spanish Red Cross to fund humanitarian aid projects that these organizations carry out in Haiti.

The NGOs will provide assistance to the sick as a result of the cholera epidemic declared in that country, will work in preventing the spread of cholera, and strengthen access to water, sanitation and hygiene promotion.

This initiative will be allocated 35,000 euros.

Beatriz Hontoria has this morning signed agreements with Cesar Javier Claros, president of Firefighters in Action Murcia, Carmen Romero, head of Caritas Diocesan Partnership Murcia, and Aurelio Luna Maldonado, President of the Spanish Red Cross Autonomous Region of Murcia.

On January 12, 2010, Haiti was ravaged by an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale practically destroying the capital, Port au Prince, and causing more than 300,000 dead, 350,000 wounded and leaving more than 1 million through homelessness.

The City of Murcia, in collaboration with NGOs, associations of persons with disabilities, Centers for Women, senior centers, etc.

Organized a campaign to collect donations and a charity concert.

It raised about 42,000,000 euros.

In late October 2010, a cholera epidemic broke out in Haiti.

Firefighters in Action, Caritas and Red Cross are carrying out projects in the country to combat this disease.
