The Road Safety Plan 2011-2013 will focus on reducing accidents (11/03/2011)

The previous plan was successful in reducing the fatalities in accidents by 91% over 2004

Murcia continue the path taken in 2007 and have a new Road Safety Plan following the success of the previous and which succeeded in reducing the number of deaths from accidents by 91% over 2004.

The Department of Traffic Safety and is working on the creation of the new Road Safety Plan 2011-2013 which seeks to reduce the number of accidents without victims.

The aim is to continue working for the safety of drivers and pedestrians, eliminating points of highest concentration of accidents and conducting information campaigns, among other actions.

The main objective of the Road Safety Plan is to identify the necessary actions to prevent accidents.

According to the data handled by the local police, the accident last year in the city reached 4,339 accidents, with the months with the highest accident November (447) October (434) and December (416) and least in August (265) April (291) and February (315).

So you can see the lowest accident rate in August mainly due to summer vacations, and a remarkable increase of the same with the increase in traffic each year representing the beginning of the school year and continues until the Christmas party a result of increased commercial activity in the city center.

Also we can see that the months of highest accident coincide with the most traffic in the municipality.

Thus, in 2010 there were more than 89.6 million journeys in Murcia (November being the month with more displacement reaching 9,003,550) and 4339 accidents which means that in a 0.0048% of vehicles travel experience an accident.

On the day of the week, Friday is where most accidents are concentrated (753) followed by Monday (709), Thursdays (655), Tuesdays (643), Wednesday (624), Saturdays ( 504) and Sunday (451).

This is seen a decrease in traffic accidents during the weekend, having a spike in accidents on Monday and Friday to mark the start and end of the workweek and students, especially college students moving to and from their places of origin.

With regard to the time slot, the highest number of accidents occur between 12 and 13 hours.

The number of traffic accidents decreased during the morning, having its peak between 12 and 13 hours due to the increased intensity of traffic as a result of full employment and commercial activity and movement to motivate schools.

Likewise, it reflects an increase in the time zone coincident with the end of the workday and the closure of shops.

Of the 4,339 initiated crowded traffic accident in 2010 63% were crowded with material damage only, 34% being educated crowded with at least one minor injury among drivers and passengers or 3% with serious injuries.

The cars are the vehicles most involved in traffic accidents (74.4%), because it is the largest type of vehicle on our roads.

Then for the same reason, although far away from cars, mopeds are both (459) and motorcycles (457).

As for the drivers involved, 69% men and 22% women had been impossible to establish the remaining 9% because it is friendly parties that do not require a certificate.

Between the age range from 30 to 40 years is 26% of the drivers involved, while between 40 and 50 years is 20%.

In addition it should be noted that a total of 24 bicycle and moped drivers are under 16 years.

In regard to the crash, stands the onslaught with about 30% of the total, followed by scraping and scope.

Areas of concentration of accidents

According to these data, the Department has established several areas of concentration (more than ten accidents per year) in the municipality.

What is sought now is to carry out various actions to reduce the accident rate at these points.

For example, one of the areas with the highest concentration of accidents (with 21 in 2009) was the intersection of Avenue Road Miguel Indurain with Beniaján but after the opening of the new road Beniaján has been reduced to a single accident was caused by driver distraction and not keeping a safe distance.

Furthermore, this new road has reduced the daily average of 10,344 vehicles in 5058.

It was also minimized the accident at the intersection of Main Street in El Palmar and Calle Lorca anticipating the red phase of traffic lights in High Street, which since last October 22 has been twelve accidents to just one.

Now going to design a strategic plan to eliminate accident hotspots in the municipality.

The risk areas already identified in the municipality and the actions to be carried out in the next month to try to eliminate them are:

-Abenarabi with Juan Carlos I: The accidents are caused by the confusion of drivers to take the lane towards Abenarabi.

It aims to inform drivers in advance about the rail to be used for its intended purpose and restructure the marking.

- Plaza Conde de El Carmen González: High intensity traffic and poor visibility of the traffic light regulation.

Will relocate the traffic lights affect drivers accessing Floridablanca Avenue from Paseo Marques de Corvera, in order to improve visibility.

- Plaza Martínez Tornel: Big crowds and intensity of traffic generated by high accident rate, at an intersection at the crossroads of several different destindos lanes.

Warning signs be installed on it.

- Ronda de Garay with Mayor Jorge Palacios Avenue: Intersection with high traffic density which delay occurs giving rise to the intensive use of the crossing.

It proposes the relocation of the traffic lights opposite the hospital, and the increase of time clearing the intersection.

- Plaza engineer Juan de la Cierva (The Rollo): As in Ronda de Garay and Avenida Mayor Jorge Palacios, high traffic intensity causes the occupation of the crossing, is currently conducting a study for a reorganization and signaling the intersection.

In all these areas the ten most common causes of accidents are inattention, changing lanes without caution, to respect the safety distance, lack of caution by giving the reverse, disobeying the signal yield, disobeying traffic lights Drawing abuse and lack of caution when entering into the circulation, invade the opposite carriageway and disobeying the stop sign
