Denounce the deterioration of air quality for particulate pollution Murcia (16/02/2011)

Ecologists in Action has been directed to the City of Murcia, the Ministry of Agriculture and Water and the Ministry of Health to warn of deteriorating air quality in the city of Murcia and its environment by pollution of PM10 microparticles.

The legislation sets a limit value of 50 micrograms of PM10 per cubic meter [1].

However, during the month of January has been in Murcia and its surrounding 12 days of exceedances of the limit value allowed by law.

Added to this is that during the month of December, also occurred 19 days of exceedances of the limit value of 50 ug/m3.

The causes of microparticles PM10 pollution lie in road traffic and industrial activities which has only been compounded by the intrusion of Saharan dust during the 6th and 7th of January.

PM10 particles can penetrate into the lower respiratory tract and are one of the most serious environmental problems by the severe conditions to ducts and respiratory system.

Particles PM10 pollutants can cause respiratory diseases, asthma, aggravation of allergic conditions and cardiovascular problems.

The data recorded by the metering station of San Basilio show a significant problem of deteriorating air quality of microparticles PM10 pollution in Murcia and its surroundings, which is compounded especially every summer due to the lower presence of rain "clean" air.

Ecologists in Action has asked the authorities concerned to develop preventive measures for these episodes of deteriorating air quality.

They claim to have carried out actions to further control emissions from industrial activities and traffic, and developing action plans to reduce pollution of the town and its surroundings.

State regulations, the Real Decree 1073/2002, obliges the institutions responsible for developing action plans with the aim of reducing air pollution levels below the limits.

Ecologists in Action said that the two measuring stations for the municipality of Murcia and its environment (Murcia-San Basilio and Sewer) are clearly insufficient for a proper assessment of air quality indices and demand increasing the number of stations control.

Another measure sought repeatedly by the environmental group to the City of Murcia is the abandonment of its present disastrous policy of green marketing, and instead responsibly address the development of a true Sustainable Mobility Plan in the municipality.

According to this organization, the measures taken so far in mobility and design of the municipality by the municipality consist of actions rather disjointed, contradictory and window dressing, which also contribute to the worsening situation, reflect the insensitivity the consistory on pollution, but also in terms of urban mobility and design of the city for its inhabitants.

Examples are parks built in the center in recent years and the recent proposals for underground car parks in the town with undeniable effect ', the construction of new roads with 3 lanes, but no sidewalks and no bike lane, the expansion of two three or more lanes on the streets that house the tram, the virtual absence of useful bike lanes and disconnection of workplaces so overcrowded as the western industrial area where public transport is absolutely ineffective and insufficient, and has no bike lane, a Despite the huge daily influx of people.

To finish this lack of initiative, the environmental association criticizes the recent introduction of one of the worst bicycle hire service can be designed, benefiting a very small number of people, and that the investment factor-effectiveness, visibility is very lower than with systems such as Barcelona, where the same bike is used in a day for many users.
