Valcárcel opens northern Espinardo Campus of the University of Murcia, which houses the faculties of Arts and Optics (31/01/2011)

The construction and equipping of two buildings, and the urbanization of this area has involved an investment by the region of 16 million euros

The president of the Community, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, opened today north of Campus Universitario de Espinardo, University of Murcia (UMU), which houses, among other infrastructure, faculties of Fine Arts and Optics and Optometry; actions between the construction and equipping of two buildings and the urbanization of this area, have entailed a total investment of 16 million euros.

During his visit to the facility, the regional chief executive, who was accompanied by the Minister for Universities and Research Company, Salvador Marin, and the rector of the University of Murcia, José Antonio Cobacho, said "intelligent design, functional efficiency energy and natural resource use of these new facilities. "

The School of Optometry, the first of this area of health sciences that exists in Spain, has 4,600 square meters usable, divided into four levels and three modules, which integrate the teaching and administration facilities of this discipline and as those relating to Optometry, Ophthalmology, University Clinic of Integral Vision (Cuvier) and Research Center (CIOyN).

Moreover, in his dual position as a center of research and teaching, meets the criteria of rationality and distribution use interior space, constituting, according Valcárcel, "an example of building excellence in research and teaching, we are pioneers at the national level through the joint efforts of faculty staff, students and the governing team, and the best example of the continued support received from the regional government through the use of ERDF funds. For its part, the Faculty of Fine Arts has developed in two phases as a set of buildings linked by a central axis in a herringbone pattern.

The first phase consists of classrooms and workshops are characterized by open spaces and the search for the maximum use of natural light suitable for the experiments.

The second phase, the main building, has spaces for teaching, study and general service areas.

Between the two phases totaling nearly 11,000 square meters.

Both schools have solar panels for hot water, which together with its design contributes to energy efficiency and the use of natural resources.

Commitment to sustainability and eco-efficiency

Furthermore, this commitment to sustainability and eco-efficiency is also evident in the project to install a solar roof in the parking lot of the Faculty of Fine Arts.

Altogether, the solar installations with a combined installed capacity of 1.3 megawatts, equivalent to the electricity needed for more than 400 homes and prevent the emission of 600 tons of carbon dioxide a year.

Community investment in these facilities amounts to nearly seven million euros, to which must be added the actions undertaken in the urbanization of the northern part of campus, which includes the Plaza de la Amistad, parking and fitness around the area, as well as equipment for teaching and research, adding a total amount of 16 million euros.

The regional president stressed that "support and adequate financial support to our public universities is a priority for the regional government since the formation of excellence of our human capital is essential for social and economic development of the region."

In this regard, Valcarcel said "we continue to work together with teams rectories in this regard as essential to our present and our future," and called for "closer relations between universities, businesses and society as a decisive factor for social and economic welfare of all Murcia. "
