Plant nearly 200 trees in young future to offset emissions Star Lift Festival SOS 4.8 (13/01/2011)

Each attendee at the festival generated less than 7 kilograms of CO2 per day, representing 75% less than the national average per capita per day generated

The collaboration between the Ministry of Culture and the Department of Environment and Urban Quality through the Area Agency on Climate Change Murcia, has allowed the Festival SOS 4.8 Star Lift sustainable.

The Minister of Culture, Pedro Alberto Cruz, and Council Member for the Environment and Urban Quality, Adela Martinez-Cacho, attended the planting of 192 trees in the Future Youth Housing aimed to offset the emissions generated during the course of the festival , last May.

These nearly 200 Aleppo pines planted compensate for its first year of the festival emissions.

Each pin 30 years of age can save up to 48t CO2 per year.

In its initial growth period the level of absorption of CO2 is much lower and estimated at 2.5 tCO2 / pine during the first year.

According to the audit conducted by ALEM, which evaluated the overall emissions of CO2 from the festival in its organization and development, taking into account fuel consumption in energy, products and resources, and including a study to estimate the generated mobility fuel consumption caused by the movement of those attending the festival which was evaluated through more than 1,200 environmental survey has been made to estimate the number of trees that would be needed to compensate.

In total the festival held in May 2010 generated a total of 469tCO2.

That is, approximately 13.4 kg CO2 per attendee which is less than 7 kg of CO2 per attendee per day.

This level of emissions is 75% lower than the national average daily per capita generated which clearly shows the level of sustainability achieved by the festival.

Remember that during the celebration of the festival, held various activities to promote environmental awareness and sustainable mobility with buses connecting the campground to the festival site and the installation of bicycle parking facilities in many SOS access area.

Another activity that was particularly striking among the public was a solar-powered photovoltaic-transformed by a bicycle generator coupled to a pedal-power of those attending the festival into electrical energy to cook their own popcorn, which is brought as a gift.

Moreover, the activity that had the most successful recycling participation was the plastic cups in exchange for gifts.

The teams of volunteers for the Planet "environmental volunteer dependent on the Department of Environment of the City of Murcia, distributed among the attendees shirts and fabric bags, yo-yo's, scarves and hats, among other gifts, in exchange for collection of 20 plastic cups.

In total, collected more than 90,000 units, which demonstrates the great reception given to this initiative.

Finally, remember that the festival won the Green'n'Clean Award, awarded by the European organization of festivals Yourope in recognition of outstanding work environment and sustainability Star Lift Festival SOS 4.8 has been completed.

Moreover, from the UK traveled to the festival's environmental adviser A Greener Festival Organization to assess the SOS and allow their participation in the Prize A Greener Festival Award, that organization presented each year to more sustainable festivals held around the world.

Thus, the festival Estrella de Levante SOS 4.8 has become the first major festival which has developed an energy audit to see if it has consumed energy efficiently, while identifying the necessary measures whose implementation resulting energy savings in subsequent editions.
