The Pan American Health Organization awarded the first prize for Comprehensive Tobacco Program of the City Technical Department of Health participate in the II Regional Urban Health Forum to be held in New York. (15/10/2010)

The good practices of the City of Murcia again become such an international level.

The Department of Health has received the first prize at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO / WHO), after holding fourth place in the Spanish American and American Competition of Good Practices in Planning and Health, among the 123 papers presented.

It is noteworthy that in 1998 the Department of Health conducted a study on the consumption of snuff in the municipal workers, the results concluded that most of these workers who smoked wanted to have professional help to quit.

For this reason, and in collaboration with the area of Occupational Health, Personal, and Health and Safety Office, it was decided to implement the smoking cessation program in the workplace.

This program has become a national reference because it was the first program in the Region of Murcia and one of the first in Spain to influence public policy making on the issue of smoking and work, and smoking and places public.

As part of the prize, the OPS has invited technical Murcia City Council, specifically the Department of Health, to participate in the II Regional Urban Health Forum to be held from 25 to 27 October in New York.

In addition to an exhibition of the winning experience, the city of Murcia will be honored during the forum.

The program of the City of Murcia is directed to the territory comprising the town of Murcia.

Consists of 22 neighborhoods in the urban and 53 rural districts in the periphery.

Is the 7 th municipality of Spain in population size.

The population is approximately 436,870 inhabitants, of which 50.38% are women and 49.61% men.

For ages the largest number of people were between 25 and 44 years, accounting for 35.50% of the total population.

In the Region of Murcia snuff consumed 33.89% of the population aged 16 and over (26.98% women and 40.72% men).
