One of the priorities of urban plan in terms of citizen participation is to become the means for citizens to feel actors and active agents in the transformation of their neighborhood.

This participatory process allows them to act on three levels: participation in diagnosing problems, developing specific proposals and decision-making, management and evaluation of activities.

For this reason, after creating the working group Laboratories Urban starts activity "Paths of Knowledge", carried out between the months of June and July 2010, part of the program activities included participation in the "strategic line 5: Social Programs, Social Inclusion and Civic Participation."

The working group's goal is to analyze urban laboratories everyday spaces (history, ecological footprint, accessibility, applications, etc.), Full of meaning and develop the ability to transform.

The activity of "Paths of Knowledge" set the goal that the residents participate with your thoughts and suggestions on improving the living conditions of the neighborhood, to make it an attractive space for themselves.

Note that Paths of Knowledge is an activity designed and developed jointly between the city of Murcia and Formez, Center for Italian Studies and Research, under the training project "50 young people in Europe" focused on the programming of Community policies especially in regard to the objectives of regional development policy.

During the months of June and July, the city of Murcia hosted three architects of that trainees who have participated in project design and development activity "Paths of Knowledge", the development of a map of "invisible "area of action.

The architects-Luigi Longobardo, Gabriella Rendina and Roberta Garbin, action designed "Paths of Knowledge" and are involved throughout the process to citizens, while they have become sources of this information in another EU country Europe.

The performance of "Paths of Knowledge" has been characterized by a participatory methodology.

Consists in conducting tours of the neighborhood, from different routes, on different days and times, groups of people of all ages equipped with cameras and field worksheets to collect the positive, neutral and negative effects of neighborhood and as sensations and emotions that represent those areas with the aim, among other things, design a map of perceptions, "adding to the physical elements of emotional imprint they produce in people.

The phases that have been carried out are:

STAGE 1: Tours of the neighborhood.

Carried out a total of 4 routes, distributed among various groups and at different times (day and night).

STAGE 2: METAPLAN.

It is conducting a brainstorming in order to conduct a territorial basis of individual ideas to reach group contributions, all based on two crucial moments: that of creativity and deepening

STAGE 3: PRESENTATION OF RESULTS.

In order to share the results of the process with all participants and the rest of the citizens, held an exhibition consisting of 9 panels explaining the process and results.

The team was composed of a multidisciplinary technical team (architects, social workers, facilitators, and assessors under the coordination of European Programs Service).

Also, it has also had the participation of young people in the neighborhood (project "youth"), Gypsy Association, Association La Casica, working group members and citizens Laboratories Espinardo Urban and outside the individual action .

Participation in the activity has been successful because it has gathered a total of 150 people.

Approximately 67% of participants are represented by females, which guarantees that have been correctly applied the criteria of equal opportunities action incorporated as one of its priorities.

Moreover, the youth population (under 24 years) is what has participated more actively in the activities, as their representation reaches two thirds of attendees.

In addition, 85% of participants are residents of the neighborhood, and the rest belongs to associations or groups with influence on it.

Regarding the assessment of activity, four out of five respondents report that the activity has been useful because they made them think about their neighborhood.

They also state that the activity has met or even seen their initial expectations and increased their level of interest in their neighborhood.

They also express their interest in participating in future proceedings.

Moreover, it should be noted that this activity is added to the already accomplished so far, including: the opening of the Project Office at the Centro Cultural de Espinardo, program participation: the creation of the Forum of Social Participation, celebration First Meeting of Social Participation and implementation working group.

We must remember that this ambitious project involves an investment of more than 10 million euros, of which 7.5 million are funded by the ERDF of the European Union over a period of six years, and the rest is direct input the City of Murcia.
