Professor Thomas Wilson supports the free flow of information in her official capacity as doctor honoris causa (30/09/2010)

Professor Emeritus, University of Sheffield Thomas Daniel Wilson reflected today in his inaugural speech as honorary doctorates from the University of Murcia, on the quality of a democracy in which the information was provided only by the political class or interest commercial.

To Thomas Wilson, who pioneered the introduction and development of the concept of Information Management, today's society requires freedom of information and secrets on this is limited to national security issues, rather than affect relations between governments and businesses, democratic states and dictators or the conditions of manufacture of certain products, as happens now.

The new honorary doctor put recent examples of the tension between freedom and secrecy of information the controversy occurred in the United Kingdom about the reasons for entering the Iraq War, the occultations by the Bush Administration of prisoners Guantánamo and the revelation at the Wikileaks website hundreds of files relating to the war in Afghanistan.

Limits on free communication of ideas, said the expert, are also produced in Italy, with Berlusconi's control over a significant proportion of media, in France, with Sarkozy's connections with the owners of the press, and the United Kingdom, with the dominance of Rupert Murdoch's Sky TV.

The new member of the Senate of the University of Murcia wondered whether democracy is possible in a scenario in which the information that the public is that they provide only the political or market interests.

The lesson of investiture addressed, in turn, the contexts of information science and the close linkage between this discipline and Informatics, a relationship that arises after the Second World War to handle the growing volume of documentary material.

This combination, added Wilson, is prominent in the development of Internet, World Wide Web and so-called social networks (Facebook, Twitter and similar sites), which has brought huge changes in the way we communicate, seek information and build relationships and communities.

According to the professor, Scientific Information may not be restricted to the relationship between information and computer, but you have to explore the world of information to develop a vision of this science as a discipline of general synthesis the world in which we live.

The "laudatio" in honor of Dr. José Vicente Rodriguez accounted for, dean of the School of Communication and Information, which, at a ceremony held in the auditorium of the Merced campus, glossed the major milestones and contributions of the career of Thomas Wilson .

Dean Wilson noted above paper, books and research projects, their willingness and availability to help the disciples and in this regard, he recalled the support for the initiation of Library and Information Studies at the University of Murcia, which was now some 25 years.

The event was closed to the intervention of the president, José Antonio Cobacho.
