A commitment to clean energy (27/09/2010)

UCAM has presented this morning at its campus facilities, the car that will participate in the First Edition of the Solar Race Murcia 2010.

The University, which participated for the first time in a competition of this kind, will fight in the category of experimental vehicles as the prototype will be participating, the 'San Antonio', is driven from solar photovoltaic systems through solar collector incorporating horizontally at the top.

The project.

The Catholic University of Murcia will compete in the Solar Race Murcia represented by the Team Racing Team San Antonio (San Antonio RT), consisting of a group of teachers and students in Grades in Computer and Telecommunication Systems Engineering, University .

In particular, it stressed that the car will be piloted by two students belonging to the nursing and engineering degrees in Telecommunications Systems.

Notably, this enormous educational R & D + i, which sits on a rigorous work towards promoting energy efficiency and sustainability, predicts the UCAM important participation in the Shell Eco-Marathon competition 2011, held in Germany .

During the presentation of 'San Antonio' have involved the Vice Chancellor for International Relations and Communication from the UCAM, Pablo Blesa, and the director of Engineering Degree in Telecommunications Systems of the UCAM, and a director of the project, Rafael Melendreras, for whom "the most valuable of this project is the level of involvement of students who are working on it, and the support we are receiving so much by the technology centers of the region and business partners, for all staff University that is being flushed with the team 100%. "

For the Catholic University of Murcia, this activity is part of the UCAM Project Green, which also includes a series of sustainable actions for the preservation of the environment, most notably The Green Festival of notches 'The Firefly Fused', the first edition took place last May, with a large number of users.

The prototype.

At present, the 'San Antonio RT' has two electric motors with different characteristics and consumption, tested both at the Circuito de Cartagena.

The choice of one or the other depends, among other factors, weather conditions that happen at the time of the race.

The car battery recharging is made from high-efficiency solar panels, which in turn, charged the lithium-ion battery that provides power to the motor.

The 'San Antonio' incorporates a chassis with a steering system, developed in collaboration with students and teachers from the Palm of Orihuela IES, which has been tested by Metal Technology Center of the Region of Murcia.

The design, inspired by the skeleton of a shark is considered one of the best hydrodynamic marine animals, "has been conceived with the primary purpose of the car as light as possible, offering the largest drag, and allowing, Above all, the pilot's safety.

The body of the prototype is made of a lightweight and durable material such as fiberglass, and its development, emphasis has been achieving an ideal compromise between efficiency and meeting the highest standards in safety.
