The old post office open to the public with 'Manifesta8' after 30 years closed (23/09/2010)

The Minister of Culture and Tourism, Pedro Alberto Cruz, today visited the former Post and Telegraph office, after the refurbishment works carried out ahead of the celebration of 'Manifesta8'.

Cruz was accompanied by the director of the International Foundation Manifesta, Hedwig Fix, the general coordinator of Manifesta 8, Esther Regueira, the commissioner of the collective Alexandria Contemporary Arts Forum (ACAF), Bassam El Baroni, the group marketing director Oren, owner the building, Enrique Carballido, and the architect in charge of the works, Manuel Clavel.

After 30 years closed to the public, the former Post and Telegraph Office "has become part of the city of Murcia as one of its major icons although no one has seen, especially younger ones," said Cruz.

Therefore, "simply enter this architecture is one of the main attractions of Manifesta8" said the counselor.

The regional head of Culture and Tourism noted that the biennial is one of its objectives "to recover the historical memory of the Region of Murcia at the same time exhibiting the most groundbreaking and cutting edge trends in contemporary art that is concerned."

Cruz also said that "as has happened in other non-cultural sites that have been used to demonstrate, here is an adaptation carried out which consisted primarily to meet safety standards to make it possible to enter visitors. "

Thus, the building is "practically raw, showing the passage of time", which "is to assume one of the main attractions and will contribute to and complement the exhibition of artistic works."
