The possibility of new indicators to fund universities is one of the topics discussed today in the first day of the seminar organized by the Ministry of Education at the University of Murcia to discuss how to fund university research.

At the opening of the PLA (Peer Learning Activities), which took place in the Hall of the Faculty of Arts, the general director of that University Policy Department, Juan José Moreno, said the presence in Murcia of experts from ten European nations will to allow a comparison of funding models in these countries and to extrapolate their experience.

Moreno noted that the conference will discuss the introduction of new indicators to replace the traditional and valued at universities, at the time of funding, more productivity and efficiency by the size of the institution concerned.

In this regard, the ministry official said that further progress on the path already started by the Autonomous Communities that universities received in accordance with the results of their research.

The director general added that the seminar will address one of the main challenges facing policy makers in terms of funding, as are the few indicators available to measure the efficiency of universities.

Juan Jose Moreno also referred to a contact with the media at the Mare Nostrum project, with which the University of Murcia and Cartagena Polytechnic Campus aspire to become of Excellence, which he called "solid."

For its part, the chancellor of the University of Murcia, José Antonio Cobacho said that this meeting of experts is of great importance, as it is, in his opinion, one of the main missions of universities, research and forms of financing and the role of women in times of economic crisis.

For the rector, the seminar will have an impact on what he considers a large deficit in the universities and the Spanish society in general: lack of private funding.

Although we must not give up public funds Cobacho said, the problem is to get private contributions.

The opening ceremony was also attended by the intervention of the University, Business and Research, Salvador Marín.
