The city of Murcia his candidacy focuses on peace, light and sustainability to become European Capital of Culture 2016 (15/07/2010)

The Councillor for Culture and European Programmes, Fatima Barnuevo, this morning the appointment of Murcia to the European Capital of Culture 2016, a proposal that articulates the theme City of Peace, land of light and offering up to 16 categories encompass the important historic and artistic city, its cosmopolitan character, harmony and tolerance between peoples, or the continued presence of Murcia in Europe.

Barnuevo Fatima explained that the application Murcia 365 proposes to hold cultural events spread over 365 days and in 16 categories, which would be added, if elected in the city, those that are necessary to promote a Murcia worldwide by 2016.

The acts are divided and organized in the most varied categories (literature, music, painting, sculpture, architecture, crafts, dance, theater, film, food, science, astronomy, restoration of heritage, photography, etc..) And supported public and private institutions across Europe.

Culture budget handling around 75 million euros, most of which will be provided by the institutions promoting the candidacy (City of Murcia, autonomous community, universities and savings), which would add Government transfers Central and European Union.

Barnuevo Fatima explained that the city has already demonstrated its ability to organize large events, as happened in 2001 with the European Youth Olympics, among others, and 25,000 cultural events are held each year are evidence of a dynamic cultural benefits millions of people.

Regarding the infrastructure needed to house the capital, the council has stressed that Murcia have a strong network of museums, theaters, auditoriums, art galleries, sports facilities and conference venues for large events, which will add a new palace multipurpose conference, a multidisciplinary cultural center open to new trends within the walls of the Old Jail, a scenario designed for opera and ballet, and a museum specializing in design and architecture.

Murcia's candidacy, built over months of exchange of ideas and reflection with many cultural groups around the world, is summarized in 16 reasons to support Murcia, which underpin the belief that the city is poised to become the Cultural Capital of Europe .

They are:

1.

We are the land of peace.

Murcia is a city of three cultures.

Christians lived together, Arabs and Jews in an example of tolerance, now over a thousand years later, still in force.

2.

We are the land of the living.

Today, 154 nationalities live in Murcia, citizens of all European countries and other continents, which, like centuries ago, are a daily example of tolerance.

3.

We land in Europe.

From the western shore of the Mediterranean, Murcia has always looked to Europe.

Picking up the legacy of Wise King Alfonso X, whose remains are deposited in the cathedral, Murcia diplomat Diego de Saavedra y Fajardo was a pioneer of European unity.

We are the candidate of the Mediterranean.

Murcia develops in many different areas (urban, cultural, social, sports, environment ...), ongoing cooperation with all European countries.

We door of tolerance.

Murcia has not only an Arab past is proud, but today is the gate of tolerance of other faiths.

Ibn Arabi, the Sufi philosopher, was born in Murcia and is a universal example of religious tolerance.

Murcia has followed suit and has developed an active policy around these values.

In 2001, Murcia hosted the first meeting between young people from around the XXI Century Sports, the European Youth Olympics, an Olympic event of first magnitude, which showed the organizational capacity of the city at a big event for the masses.

Murcia, 2009 Sustainable City elected and nominated as the most sustainable city in the world in the Globe Awards 2010 awarded by the Globe Forum in Sweden, also received United Nations recognition for the good work of Murcia in sustainable water management.

11. We are the candidate of all and an example of volunteerism.

The nomination was born in Murcia society, not just a political or institutional commitment, but has the support of all public and private institutions, universities, artists and personalities from the world of culture.

In the same line of participation, human capital of the hundreds of Murcia willing to work as volunteers in the cultural capital is already ready.

More than 25,000 cultural events take place every year in the municipality of Murcia.
