Tourism in the city of Murcia grows in the first quarter of the year and exceeds 100,000 visitors (24/04/2018)

Overnight stays soar almost 10% so far this year.

José Ballesta attends the meeting in Madrid where the agreement between the State Secretariat of Tourism and the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) has been approved to manage the Integrated Tourism Quality System in Destinations (SICTED).

Tourism in the municipality of Murcia has recorded an increase of 2,200 visitors in the first quarter of the year compared to last year, exceeding 107,556 travelers between January and March 2018. Murcia exceeded for the first time in its history the 450,000 annual tourists in 2017, reaching the record figure of 748,000 overnight stays.

Within the measures to boost the sector that includes the Operational Plan of Tourism Development of Murcia 2020 horizon, Mayor José Ballesta has attended today in Madrid at the meeting in which the collaboration agreement between the Ministry of Tourism has been approved and the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), to manage the Integral System of Tourist Quality in Destinations (SICTED).

The city of Murcia ranks number seven in Spain as a Quality Tourism Destination and the City Council was distinguished in 2017 by the Ministry of Tourism as the Best SICTED Manager, in recognition of the work and effort in favor of quality, through the development and the implementation of this system in tourist companies and services Murcia destination.

The agreement approved today by the Board of Government of the FEMP aims to promote a common strategy of tourism quality policies and systems in destinations, especially supporting local administrations, and involves a renewal of this agreement that both entities have signed since 2001

Overnight stays increase by almost 10%

So far in 2018, Murcia has received a total of 107,556 travelers, which is 2.09% more than in the first quarter of 2017 (2,201 more visitors), according to the latest data collected by the Hotel Occupancy Survey of the INE.

This increase has been totally concentrated in those from abroad, which represent 18.43% of the total number of visitors.

With regard to overnight stays, they have grown by 9.24% in this period.

The average stay is 1.70 days, above that recorded in the first quarter of the previous year (1.59 days).

In this sense, visitors of foreign origin are those who have a longer average stay, with 2.07 days compared to 1.61 days for national visitors.
