The UCAM will reduce its Co2 emissions by more than 110,000 kg per year by converting its facilities into a smart environment, in the hands of Suez (20/04/2018)

The UCAM SUSTAINABLE project takes a new impulse with the implementation of the energy efficiency program implemented by the University together with Suez Advanced Solutions.

A program that provides energy savings equivalent to the average annual consumption of more than 50 homes.

The project is in the auditing phase, in which the Technological Institute of Murcia (ITM) and students of the University are collaborating.

The UCAM SUSTAINABLE project is the environmental program of the Catholic University of Murcia, inspired by the invitation of Pope Francis in his Encyclical Laudato Sì, for the Care of the Common House. It aims to position the University as a sustainable campus and train professionals who know the importance of preserving the environment, and that welcomes initiatives such as `zero paper ', the promotion of the use of bicycles, the separation of waste, etc.

In this framework, the UCAM has taken a step further by launching an energy efficiency program that will convert all its facilities into a technological environment aligned with the Smart philosophy and that will save 405,697 kwh per year, equivalent to energy expenditure 50 homes per year.

It will also have environmental impact, since this project foresees the reduction by the University of the polluting emissions in 110.755 kg per year.

The agreement has been closed by the president of the UCAM, José Luis Mendoza, and Juan Antonio Imbernón, director of Energy at SUEZ Advanced Solutions, company responsible for carrying out this energy efficiency program, who said that "we have found at the UCAM an entrepreneurial partner with an innovative vocation ", being his commitment to provide the University with the best results.

The Technological Institute of Murcia of the UCAM (ITM) works with Suez in the first phase of the project, conducting a comprehensive energy audit of the facilities of the two university campuses, Murcia and Cartagena, and the schools of El Palmar, Los Dolores and Yecla, in which they have the participation of UCAM students who are already taking measurements and collecting data.

For the executive director of the ITM, César Nicolás "this project gives the opportunity to the university students to participate in real programs that provide them with specific training and according to the needs of the company, which reinforces one of the objectives of the ITM, improving the employability of our students. "

Based on this Energy Audit and the web monitoring of the facilities, Suez will prepare the Energy Efficiency Master Plan where the implementation of energy saving and efficiency measures will be planned in a specific and optimized way.

These are measures focused on lighting, outdoor lighting and air conditioning in installations where innovative technology will be used to reduce and optimize their consumption.

This plan is governed by the principles of Energy Services Company (ESE), that is, optimize energy management and installation, amortizing investments through energy savings achieved in the medium and long term.

The Catholic University is currently in the process of implementing the ISO 14001 standard.

Suez is a leader in project management and environmental services, which develops its activity aligned with the objective of circular economy on the water, energy and waste axes.
