The steps of the DIETAplus project in follow-up (19/04/2018)

On April 10, 2018, the follow-up meeting of the DIETAplus project 'Nutritional strategies for the improvement of productive performance: the use of functional feed in aquaculture' was held at the Faculty of Biology of the University of Barcelona (UB). that participates the University of Murcia (UMU).

This research, granted within the framework of the call for National Plans of Aquaculture, of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Environment;

Its objectives are the development of feed intended to improve the state of health and welfare of fish for aquaculture such as sea bream or sea bass, research into the use of additives that improve the response of fish to situations of acute and chronic stress, as well as the stimulation of the immune system of the animal and improvement of the defenses in mucous membranes such as the gills.

The first results show that the use of the amino acid tryptophan in the diet of the corvina is able to mitigate the activation to different types of stress.

In addition, the use of this amino acid as an additive in the feed has also served to improve the immunological markers of this species under different experimental conditions.

This research has also demonstrated how different dietary ingredients such as polyphenolic compounds positively influence the general condition of the animal and immunity of mucous membranes.

In this meeting an administrative follow-up and the economic justification of the project was carried out, it was oriented to address the status of the different planning tasks, the methodologies used were presented and the preliminary results of the different biological samples processed by each one were reviewed. one of the partners of the consortium.

At the same time, future tasks were planned to be developed in order to meet the general and specific objectives set out in the project.

In addition, it was planned to hold a Technical Conference focused on the sector in order to transfer the knowledge generated to interested aquaculture producers.

"We must emphasize that DIETAplus has been designed to provide an innovative response to the needs of the sector in the development of an integrated approach to improve existing formulations of seabream and corvina diets, and for this reason, it is essential for the project to enhance the transfer of results to the aquaculture sector "highlights the person in charge of the project at the University of Murcia, Mª Ángeles Esteban Abad.

The meeting was attended by responsible scientists and researchers from the different institutions that are part of the project: Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA, Dr. Enric Gisbert, coordinator of the project), the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB, Dr. Lluis Tort) , the Institute of Agricultural and Fisheries Research and Training (IFAPA, Dr. Marcelino Herrera), and the University of Murcia (UM, Dr. María Ángeles Esteban).

Likewise, scientists responsible for subcontracted institutions participated in the project: Institute of Marine Sciences of Andalusia (ICMAN-CSIC, Dr. Carmen Sarasquete), University of Barcelona (UB, Dr. Antonio Ibarz) and University of Cádiz (UCA, Dr. Juan Miguel Mancera).
