The University of Murcia approves a protocol against sexual harassment (16/04/2018)

The University of Murcia has approved the Protocol for the prevention, detection and action against sexual harassment, based on sex, sexual orientation and gender identity and expression;

a document that will allow the institution to have the right tools to be able to act on possible complaints and that is born to give support and safety to the victims of harassment situations.

"This document is necessary so that the institution can act quickly and effectively against these complaints and is important because it provides clarity on the possible measures and actions to adopt, something that is a fundamental aspect for the victims, the part that is in the most vulnerable position in these situations ", explains Eva María Rubio Fernández, director of the Unit for Equality between Women and Men of the University of Murcia.

The protocol avoids the uncertainty of those who denounce, since the procedure is established in detail and its confidentiality and protection is guaranteed.

"It's about giving them support," stresses the director of the Unit for Equality, which makes clear that we are facing "a historical document for the University of Murcia."

The protocol establishes a cataloging of situations that can be considered sexual or sexist harassment.

Unwanted friction or touching, the creation of an uncomfortable work environment due to comments and offensive actions or lewd gestures are just some of the assumptions detailed in this protocol.

The document establishes in detail the procedure to be followed by those who suffer harassment in order to denounce it and details the process and the terms of the instruction so that the person is clear about the entire procedure.

Complaints may be filed by the victims or by anyone who has knowledge of these situations.

The Unit for Equality is responsible for channeling complaints and coordinating the response of the institution.

The University of Murcia will prepare a guide to disseminate the main aspects of the protocol among the university community.
