The Postal Market will become, as of September, a national benchmark for gastronomy and leisure (11/04/2018)

The Mayor visited this morning the works of the new space, which will allow the creation of about 250 jobs and will have an economic impact of between 5 and 8 million euros and will receive an influx of between 400,000 and 500,000 annual visitors.

In the existing 3,000 square meters will be installed 15 food stalls, two gourmet stores, a tourist information point and a space for cultural activities.

The creation works of the new Postal Market follow their course according to the work plan established

Mayor José Ballesta, accompanied by Javier López Cerrón, general director of Orenes Grupo, and Miguel Pichardo and Manuel Borrego, partners of Mercantil Española de Mercados, visited this morning the rehabilitation works of the emblematic building of Pintor Villacís Street that will become , according to the forecasts the next month of September, in a national tourist reference through gastronomy and leisure.

Likewise, the councilors of Urbanism, Environment, Water and Vegetable Garden, Antonio Navarro, of Commerce and Institutional Relations, Maruja Pelegrín, and of Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs, Jesús Pacheco, participated in the event.

Ballesta explained that "with the realization of this project three fundamental objectives for the city are met: to recover this unique building in Murcia that is part of our collective memory;

offer a new gastronomic space that will attract tourism and complete the already magnificent local hotel offer and, in addition, boost employment in a sector that holds a huge weight as an engine of our economy.

According to the project of works, executed thanks to the alliance between Orenes Group and Mercantil Española de Mercados, the building will conserve the structure, both the façade and the interior layout.

The axis of the new market will be the patio, having around it the main places of use and circulation.

That central zone will be free for the installation of tables and for the celebration of events, shows or exhibitions.

Around it, distributed along the entire ground floor, will be installed 15 food stalls with different and exclusive activities, two stores selling gourmet products and a tourist information point.

In addition, an outdoor space will be enabled as a terrace at the foot of the street.

In total, 3,000 square meters whose goal is to be a permanent showcase of the culture and cuisine of the Region of Murcia and Spain, with a model that is already developed successfully in other cities of the country such as Madrid, Barcelona or Seville.

50 companies involved

This new space will have an important social and economic impact since more than 50 companies will participate, from its construction and during the activity period, and will create about 100 new direct jobs and more than 150 indirect ones, in addition to those linked to the constructive process.

Previous studies indicate that an influx of between 400,000 and 500,000 visitors per year will be reached, making it one of the most visited places in Murcia next to the Cathedral.

With these figures, the economic impact will be between 5 and 8 million euros per year.

The Post Office Market will have the participation of merchants, hoteliers, brands and reference products of the sector, both locally and nationally.

To do this, a contest of activities will be launched to award the different available positions.

In the second week of May, bidding rules will be announced and invitations will be sent to participate in the process, which will last two months.
