Social Rights launches a program to promote wellness and health care in the Centers for the Elderly of Murcia (10/04/2018)

As of next June, up to 200 workshops on self-care, postural hygiene, fall prevention, self-massage and body stretching will be carried out in the elderly's social centers. The workshops will be given by qualified professionals with qualifications in the field of physiotherapy, psychology, nursing or nutrition

The councilors of Social Rights and Development Cooperation, Conchita Ruiz, and Sports and Health, Felipe Coello, presented this morning the new Program "Taking care of your health, improve your well-being", which will begin to develop in all Social Centers of Older of the municipality of Murcia.

With the slogan "Taking care of your health, improves your well-being" the Department of Social Rights and Development Cooperation launches this program, which is added to the rest of existing activities in the 76 centers for the elderly, with the commitment to continue allocating resources that favor active and healthy care and aging, with a preventive and group approach.

"The contents of the workshops that are going to be offered are about 10 different topics that are related to the promotion of health and healthy lifestyles in the elderly in their physical, mental and social dimensions," Councilor Conchita detailed. Ruiz during the presentation.

For this year 2018, and from next June, will be able to develop up to 200 workshops with a total of 1,200 hours, which will involve an investment of 41,000 euros.

For the next year, 82,000 euros will be allocated in total and the number of workshops and hours to be carried out in the programmed activities will be doubled.

"The aging process involves biological, psychological and social changes that occur over time, which is why we have tried to adjust the themes to issues such as sleep hygiene and relaxation techniques, self-care, nutrition and longevity, postural hygiene and prevention of falls, reeducation of the pelvic floor, circuits of biosaludables exercises, self-massage and body stretching, positive thinking and therapeutic effects of laughter, discovery of emotions and healthy aging, "explained Councilman Felipe Coello.

Older people associated with the centers, for their part, as is the case in the case of training courses, will be able to choose the subjects that are most interesting to them and that best suit their preferences.

The workshops will be taught by qualified professionals with qualifications in the field of physiotherapy, psychology, nursing and nutrition among others.

They are intended to be dynamic workshops, with a group, active and participatory methodology without leaving aside the particular circumstances of each of the major participants, so that the contents can be learned and integrated for greater benefit and use.

Groups 4/40

During the press conference has been recalled the existence of programs to complete the programming that the City of Murcia makes available to the elderly in order to encourage the practice of moderate physical activity, regularly, in the population of the municipality.

Thus, the 4/40 Program that proposes the constitution of groups of adults who are called to walk, at a brisk pace, four days a week for forty minutes each time, by routes designed in the vicinity of their home.

"Physical activity is essential for the maintenance and improvement of health, contributing to the prevention of a large number of diseases, with numerous benefits for the physical, mental and social health of people when practiced on a regular basis," explained Felipe Coello.

Among the benefits of adopting this healthy lifestyle, include:

- Reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, helps prevent and reduce hypertension.

- Helps control weight and reduces the risk of obesity.

- Contributes to psychological well-being, reduces stress, anxiety and feelings of depression and loneliness.

- Increase bone density.

It contributes to prevent and reduce Osteoporosis.

- Reduces the risk of suffering from type II diabetes.

Currently there are working groups that perform their activity from Monday to Thursday in San Ginés, Llano de Brujas, Javalí Nuevo, Espinardo, Esparragal, Los Garres, Malecón, Beniaján, Vistalegre, El Raal, Murcia Centro, Infante, La Ñora, Nonduermas, Santiago and Zaraiche, La Raya, Zarandona, Patiño, El Palmar and Aljucer.

All of them have the accompaniment, during one of the sessions, of a professional monitor.
