Representatives of 48 countries join in the UCAM "for the peace and development of the peoples" (28/02/2018)

Diplomats and international students of the Catholic University of Murcia have participated in an act of reading messages and igniting the 'Torch for Peace', carried by the Olympians Jennifer Pareja and Miguel Ángel López from the Monastery of Los Jerónimos to Capuchinos, where an ecumenical meeting will be held tonight

The Campus of the Jerónimos has been this morning a melting pot of races, cultures and religions, united by the peace, the coexistence and the integral development of the towns, in an act organized by the UCAM, institution with great vocation of internationalization and of defense of these values, on the occasion of the XVII International Conferences of Charity and Volunteering.

The event was chaired by José Luis Mendoza, president of the UCAM;

Alejandro Blanco, president of the Spanish Olympic Committee;

Monsignor Segundo Tejado, undersecretary of the Department for Service and Development, and Antonio Alcaraz, vice-rector of University Extension.

In the event, held in a fully crowded Temple of Los Jerónimos, representatives of 48 countries participated, including international students of the institution, ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps, as well as representatives of Orthodox patriarchates, and Catholic churches, Evangelical, Lutheran and Anglican.

Igniting the Torch

A group of students have ignited the flame of the athletes Miguel Ángel López, champion of the World of March, and Jennifer Pareja, former water polo player and Olympic runner-up with the Spanish National Team, have lit the 'Torch of Peace', with the who have carried out a solidarity march that has started from the Campus of Los Jerónimos to the San Buenaventura School (Capuchinos) in Murcia.

José Luis Mendoza assured that the institution is very aware of Pope Francis on this day, and that "he is doing so much to promote peace among nations, religions or cultures."

In addition, the president of the UCAM, who recalled that these Days of Charity and Volunteering began in 1998 with the creation of the International Institute John Paul II, has assured that the institution he represents has been offered to His Holiness to offer training online and free to the most needy.

For his part, Alejandro Blanco has highlighted the importance of sport as a factor of integration in the world: "Sport is much more than weekend competition, it is cohesive of the people," he said and has defended his role in the defense of values.

Inauguration of the Volunteer Exhibition
